With an M20 there is 15+ bhp to be gained from this alone.
Still an M42 at heart though.S42, hardly tuned from stock is it?

Yes thats undeniable! The M42 is a better designed engine. I just said an STOCK M20 is more tunable than a STOCK M42.Dave_M3 wrote:So really your implying that the M42 has far better designed parts out of the box than an M20![]()
Its not tuned from stock, its built from scratch.hammoj28 wrote:bss325i wrote:Still an M42 at heart though.S42, hardly tuned from stock is it?You were talking about tuning.....well thats tuning.

M20 is a bit of an old anchor though. For the size the m42 is the better engine.....

Wouldn't be financially viable for them to produce a 4 pot with that power for the road i expect. Was probably much easier to use the 3.2, but the 3.2 is much more advanced than the old m20. It has the right number of cams for a start. Much better design.if the 4 pots are better why did bmw use a 6 pot in e36 m3s

not much difference between e30 325 and e36 325 in powerDave_M3 wrote:The E36 M3s actually have proper 6 pots though that give out decent power for the engine sizeif the 4 pots are better why did bmw use a 6 pot in e36 m3s
therefore 6 pot is betterhammoj28 wrote:bodger wrote:Wouldn't be financially viable for them to produce a 4 pot with that power for the road i expect. ah the junior demlot appears.....maxfield wrote:Makes it a much better engine than a M20...
Also with it weighing less, it makes the car handle better.
That pretty much sums it up...Simon13 wrote:ah the junior demlot appears.....maxfield wrote:Makes it a much better engine than a M20...

4 valves doesn't mean it's better. Everyone thinks it is but when you look alot closer to the subject it's swings and roundabouts.
M20 was designed in the early 70's and a good one is a very tough engine. It's old and thats all thats wrong with it. Very good for what it is and the 2.7 makes a lovely engine. Nice simple engine too, try timing an M42 up properly it's so easy to f**k it up.
M42? again good one is ok and they have very good low mid torque for the capacity due to the inlet design, but they won't put up with the simple brutal abuse an M20 will. They are expensive to fix also. If you want 16v 4 pot an S14 is the only way to go imo. S14 us probably the toughest bmw engine made so far they are animals and it takes alot of misabuse to wear/kill one! I know M42's made good race engines after the S14 but they cost alot more to tune as parts and knowledge are scarce. M20 is the most tuned bmw engine ever really

Single cam engines can be more torquey in cases, but obviously they really loose out in top end.Why is 4 valves not better though?

smooth, juicy boat anchors..... but they still have a place in my heart, after all my motor is a 320!hammoj28 wrote:Cmon, surely we can get 11 pages. Right! 320's......lol
