MMMMMM, got an idea my clutch release bearing is on its way out, when on tick over with the clutch in no noise, with the clutch out I'm getting a grumbling noise with slight knocking, not so bad as I wont drive her but still there, now this only happens when she's been on a run and up to temperature, when cold there is no noise at all.
Any ideas as to wether I am barking up the wrong tree.

i have the same problem mate , exactly how u described it, my car is a pre fl 325i its been like that for the last 10,000ks the grumbling noise anyway but only recently the knocking noise has started wen i come to a complete stop u can here it coming from just infront of the gear shift lever underneath car, would like to know some answers or someone else whos had this problem and how they fixed it,

straight forward, new release bearing. but whilst it is in bits stick a complete clutch in as well sachs clutch at gsf complete with bearing is about £90......you may find that when your car is hot that you also get a judder on take up just as you move off......either way its a gearbox out job

Worn gearbox bearings probably, park next to a wall and open the drivers door so you can hear the sound from under the car and hold down the clutch untill the layshaft stops spinning and the noise should go away.
Then when you release the clutch peddle the noise should return, the only cure is a gearbox rebuild and even then it will return after a few thousand miles unless you replace every gear as well £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£.
If its that then just live with it, it won't cause any trouble untill its too worn and then you'll get the dredded kangeroo effect.
If the rumbling noise continues with the peddle held down then it could be the release bearing but it should stop when you release the peddle, if its that then its a lot cheaper to fix parts wise, but you still need to get the gearbox out.

Am I right in thinking:
When the clutch is in the noise will automatically goes away=not clutch but the release bearing?
And when the noise gradually goes away when the clutch is in=gearbox bearings?
I think most cases will be the release bearing. Vary rarely have I heard BMW gearboxes to go (unless you put a bigger engine which is not made for the box).
If it turns out to be the gearbox I have a spare Sport gearbox available if anyone needs it.

Basically it was happening as soon as the clutch was let out, noise happened instantly without havin to wait for lay shaft to settle etc, and when you put the clutch in the noise went in an instant, the clever ones amongst you might of noticed that I am using past tense, ahhhhhh I hear you say, well havin got the idle sorted (Brianmooooore said that if battery is disconnected for a suitable length of time the ecu will forget its settings and it will take a couple of hours of driving for it to get back in line so to speak, and as mine had been sitting for about a year this made sense) anyway when all had been done and the idle was up to 750 +/- 40 rpm the noise has gone.
The idle was well low 500rpm max and I didnt want to twiddle with it until I'd tried the ecu settle down.
Now I could just be sticking my head in the sand and because the noise has gone with a faster tickover the problems gone, but everything else seems to be fine, so I will continue to monitor and will feep you all informed.

as i have the same problem as transporter im gona get the box taken out an get a new release bearing put in an sum new redline synthetic oil put in, by the way is the thrust bearing the same thing as release bearing. and also is the gearbox bearing a major one to do also, is it on the outside of the box or inside the box, i live in a town in new zealand were theres no bmw specialists so just tryn to sus out before it goes to the mechanic,
