im picking up a g plate 316i on friday, it has an issue of running a bit rough so i was hoping for some pointers on what i should be looking for. i'll be checking the plugs, leads and air filter first of all but are there more serious issues to be wary of. i heard the car running briefly and it doesnt sound all that tappety, has done 144k miles and is fairly straight

i dont wanna scare you but mines been a bit of a nightmare.

as soon as ive sorted one problem out, another one comes up

make sure the exhaust isnt blowing....that causes them to run like a bag of spanners...

find out when the timing belt was last done.. over 40k ago, id change it...

make sure that the temperature stays in the middle....even when idling for 10-15 mins....and the heater works fine.......

also check the clutch and box for strange noises

A lot of E30s coming into the enthusiast sector of the market have spent their recent years in the more 'council' sector, where servicing and proper maintenance have been severely lacking or non existent.
E30s can take this kind of treatment for a few years with no long term effects, but it does man that when you aquire one it is in need of a thorough and complete service, and will have a selection of well known common issues to sort.
Once this has been done, a 15 - 20 year old E30 will be one of the most reliable cars on the road, and will outlast much of the shiny new tat sitting in dealer showrooms today.
No great costs are involved in sorting an E30, as long as you are half handy with some spanners. Spare parts, new and second hand, are readily and cheaply (even from the dealer) available.
Complete second hand M40 engines are no problem, as they are worth little more than their scrap value!

Is this rough running when its cold? Hot? Both?

well summed up brian, the e30's ive had previously have been as described; in need of a thorough service and a valet plus various bulbs replacing. will be collecting it on friday and taking it to work on saturday so i can get it on a ramp and have a good look around under it, will also balance the wheels and generally just tinker with it. will post up some piccys and a general sum up of happy or not i am with it!
