If the bottom hose is cold and feels empty then almost certainly the thermostat stuck shut based on the current info.
Engine conversions, Auto to manual conversions, parts, servicing etc etc... For anything e30 call 07718 901737
i had the same problem m8 and i called the recovery he put lots of water in the car n took the air lock out bleeding or watever it is and now its stays on the half mark b 4 it would go on the red and overheat hope this helps
i did ask the recovery guy he told me to fill it up with water while the car is runing n wen the temp goes on half just squeez the pipes n make sure theres no air lock and the car goes warm from inside to make sure ur therostat is opening and its not stuck etc. i dont no how do to it myself this is wot he told me i would rather take it to my local mechanic and get it dun. hope this helps
i had a very similar problem with my m20, the top pipe off the thermostat housing was red hot, bottom one pipe off the rad was cold.
I removed the stat, which didnt really do much, replaced the water pump, which again didnt really acheive much and it turned out to be the viscous fan not working. I had recently rebuilt the engine, and the mistake i made was leaving the viscous fan layed face down, and apparently it knackers them because the oil leaks out of them or something...
Does the car over heat when your driving it along, or just when you stop, when the fans most required?

the fan should literally increase in speed when the temperature increases, with mine it just span at a reletivly slow speed and didnt change, hence overheating.
n e way, hope it helps. Guy.
you might be better off putting this question in the technical bit mind!!

take the cap of the radiator, take the top hose off the radiator loosen the end attached to the thermostat housing and turn the hose so the radiator end is pointing upwards..now fill SLOWLY with anti freeze/water mixed 50/50 until it starts to pour from the top of the radiator..refit hose and radiator cap...now run car till up to operating temp (usually just under half) turn heater controls to full heat and fan stage 2..going back to the radiator, beside the cap you will see a large plastic crosshead screw open this carefully to about half open, (i use a 50p on the screw as its a perfect fit) now rev the engine to around 2000rpm and watch for running water thru the screw you will know its bled if you have roasting heaters in the cabin and there are no bubbles coming thru the screw
