is it possible to lessen the injector tap and the whine from the gearbox?
i cant remember driving an e30 that didnt have these characteristic noises but i would like to quieten mine down a little if at all possible. got a spare set of injectors so they would be the first job but the car will be having a mechanical overhaul at some stage which would be the perfect chance for a gearbox rebuild.
just want to know if its worth the money getting these items refurbed or whether its just another way of pi**ing money up the wall.
anyone had them done?

A lot of E30's have the offical BMW 'blue tak' under the steering wheel centre modification!
Works wonders!
I've had some injectors refurbed, and they still made some noise, gearbox if noisy would be a worthwhile job though.

cheers guys, i knew about the dum dum on the column trick and have checked this after first driving the car after the rebuild, the noise was very intrusive but turned out to be the gromet round the heater pipes.i just feel that my injectors could be a little quieter as could the box.

Cleaning the injectors doesn't do a thing for the noise, and a new set will set you back hundreds.
The gearbox i've been putting off for ages in the hope that someone else will do a detailed re-build no here
I don't want to fit new bearings to it, put it back together and then on the car. Then find out its worn gears and is still making a noise
Some of the gears come in at £130+ each
and i can't bring myself to hand over that much cash for one part
I had a read on it and its trial and error fitting the shims to the lay shaft so you'll need an assortment of sizes to remove the play. You have to fit one, put it together, then pry the layshaft through the filler hole, if it moves start again.....
Let me know how you get on

i was thinking of more like a refurb for the injectors. does anyone do a kit? or has anyone had them done.
i know what you mean about the box too, thats exactly where i didnt want to find myself. i know a lad who worked at bmw when e30`s were new (other than me of course
) and i might have to nip over and see if he knows of any common area that they wear.i remember some cars picking up big miles very quickly so its not too far fetched that he may have had this to do back then.
mine has only covered 87k and the noise is no worse than most e30`s i have heard but every now and then a quiet one turns up and they just sound a little sweeter.remember spadge having a touring that was near silent

I had a set of injectors ultrasonicly cleaned last year and i think it actualy made them louder, i don't think theres much else that can be done to them because the tops sealed on, but you never know

I may try wrapping them with some kind of tape and see if that shuts them up.
I've got a cab thats just done 65k yesterday and the gearbox is a quitest one i've come across, its just a shame i can't enjoy the silence with all the windows ratteling around and the doors knocking because of the scuttle shake
I think i'll rape it

Matt, those injectors that I gave you last autumn had been ultrasonically cleaned. If you can't find them I can do another set for you in exchange, I've got all the gear now

still got em iain, might chuck em in and see what happens. looked at realoem and injectors are $40 or $70 depending on whether theyre bosch or lucas iirc. going to price them at my dealers
had an over the phone diagnosis of the gearbox today and he reckoned the bearings were the most likely culprit but would have a proper listen if i took it to him.

87k from new with no sign of neglect so unlikely a worn head
got a slightly noisy tappet which will get adjusted but its deffo the injectors causing the major noise
its like a skeleton having a w@nk in a dustbin

Thing is, the injectors are not that noisy on a M20. I think you would be hard pushed to hear them over the head while driving.
One way to tell is to take a drive and with a light load listen to the noise, then lift off and if the noise remains its not the injectors (which is the case most of the time)

Iain T, i need some injectors cleaned mate, can you let me know if you can do it for me?

Iain ,
I used this guy for injector service parts when i cleaned mine , prices were very cheap even with the shipping from the USA.
. Think all seals , filters and caps for my injectors came to about £17 with shipping.
