How do you test a starter motor?

i want to test the starter motor before give it any paint and make it look a bit cleaner how do i go about doing it?

Put 12 volts through it? Check the sprocket?

what do i connect up though i've tried connecting 12v to the main earth and live feeds but nothing there is two more connecters on the bottom :mad:

just done it again and nearly s**t myself just as i touched the live to the starter switch someone walked in and f*****g screamed :x

Set of jump leads.
Obviously Red to battery +,black to battery -.
Connect the Black to starter motor body and briefly touch the Red to the main terminal on the starter then touch to the smaller one.
