which are the best tyres?
Moderator: martauto
i`ve had a set of 17" schnitzers refurbished to go on my touring, but i`m not sure what tyres to put on them, i`ve seen some yokohama parada`s and toyo proxes at a good price, anyone using these? or any other recomendations.

the BEST tyres are probably Michelin Pilot Sport 2. Expensive.
Goodyear used to be good, but since they've started making their GSD3s in China (which I have a set) they are shite - sidewalls like marshmallow when making progress. And I've seen lots of comments about splitting sidewalls, poor quality control, etc etc.
I'll be going for Uniroyal Rainsports next; I've seen nothing but good reports on these, and not as expensive as the MPS2s
In my experience, Jap tyres are very good (in the dry) to start with, but they soon drop off in ability, and they don't last as long as the Europeans.

The Goodyears made in China are fake copies which are totally inferioor the tread may look same but the rubber compound is cheap rubbish, the Goodyears designed to be soft when cold and get harder as they get hotter the Chinese ones just falls away. The Goodyears you want are made in Germany, its embossed on the tyre wall if you cant see it walk away

no I'm afraid you are mis-informed - the ones stamped 'Made in Taiwan' are not suitable for the EU - they are not cheap copies even - they are simply made by Goodyear for the far-east market.ShakeyC wrote:The Goodyears made in China are fake copies which are totally inferioor the tread may look same but the rubber compound is cheap rubbish, the Goodyears designed to be soft when cold and get harder as they get hotter the Chinese ones just falls away. Goodyear make tyres for the EU in their German and China factories now; the different factories make different tyre sizes.

yoko parada spec 2's are meant to be very good.
Toyo proxes t1r's are a good all rounder, not too pricey but good grip in the wet and dry.
Whatever you do dont use pirelli p6000's. Worst tyres I have ever had.

I am only going by what Goodyear said to me, i bought some tyres from local shop they were shocking so i popped back in to complain. The tyre shop gave me Goodyear UK phone no where spoke to some nice brummies and got replacements shipped out nextday delivery with "Made in Germany" and thats what Goodyear customer services said the reason was; if you know any better bud pls share.orangecurry wrote:no I'm afraid you are mis-informed - the ones stamped 'Made in Taiwan' are not suitable for the EU - they are not cheap copies even - they are simply made by Goodyear for the far-east market.ShakeyC wrote:The Goodyears made in China are fake copies which are totally inferioor the tread may look same but the rubber compound is cheap rubbish, the Goodyears designed to be soft when cold and get harder as they get hotter the Chinese ones just falls away. A) long thread on pistonheads - user 'redlake27' works for Goodyear.ShakeyC wrote:I am only going by what Goodyear said to me, i bought some tyres from local shop they were shocking so i popped back in to complain. you have to read the whole thing, but essentially Goodyear state:-
'The China and Germany F1s are approved for UK use. This doesn't just mean that they are e-marked, but that we choose to sell them in the UK market because they (irrespective of design changes) fall within the very tight performance parameters that we set for this market.
The GSD3 has now been replaced with the Asymmetric, but the GSD3 will continue to be sold in certain sizes to offer an alternative for buyers that don't want a mismatched set. This is common marketing practice for all tyre companies, not just Goodyear.
If you have a China or German made e-marked F1 GSD3 they are fine for UK use. If you have a Thai made non e-marked F1 GSD3 they are not suitable for this market and drivers should report the matter to trading standards. '
b) Part of an email from Peter Wayte - Goodyear technical services.
This was after a long telephone conversation about various other points.
------------------------
..........We do have a factory in China and it is making 215/45/17 91Y GSD3 for us.
The 0407 tells me the tyres were made week 4 in 2007 so the tyres are nice new fresh stock.

on topic though, it does seem toyo proxys are quite popular choice, anyone know a decent price for a set of 205/50/16, so i know if my local place is trying to butt rape me

the f1's I've got on at the rear at the moment are pish to be honest, I had them in a 150bhp fiesta a few years aback and they were ace but in my sport = pish. I muct look at the makings to see what they are!
I go through tyres that quick to be honest It hink I'll just get the cheapest set next time, generic brand name, lol

then you'll go thru them even quicker as they tend to blister when lack of grip sends you into a kerb.lolI go through tyres that quick to be honest It hink I'll just get the cheapest set next time, generic brand name, lol

This has been discussed before. Unless you want to get duck taped and butt raped by buying Pilots or a semi slick, do the sensible thing and by some Toyo Proxy t1r's or gsd3 Eagle F1's. Best road tyres, superb grip and will last as long, if not longer than anything.

The best tyres are free ones. The grippiest ones I have ever had were some sort of Toyo Proxes.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bridgestones. I've tried all sorts over the years, but always seem to end up with Bridgestones. I loved the old S02. The S03 was very good, but tramlined a fair bit, and my current RE050's are superb.
Toyo are good, Goodyear GSD3 I hated, Avon ZZ1 were lethal. Falken make some pretty good tyres if you don't want to spend too much cash, and Fulda also make reasonable tyres.
Ian.

If it aint broke - Modify it...
i have used bridgestone potenzas recently and they are excellent but today couldn't get them so just bought some toyos seem good too. as for wear in my experience you either get grip or longevity. the longest wearing tyres i have had are continental eco contact but they are lethal on a powerful rear wheel drive car in the rain.
