Electric Supercharger
Moderator: martauto
Ok - I know this is a controversial topic but I think (just to see and for fun) I'm going to buy one:
Ebay link
I can see that there's potential for make this work. I know that my afm doesn't open all the way on full chat so there's head room to get more fuel in if this thing can get more air in. maybe it can't actually create any increase in compression but perhaps it can get a cleaner charge in during the overlap period or improve in other small ways?
I fully expect to read 100 replies telling me not to waste my time of money but I still suspect that there can be some gain to be had even if it just small.
Any constructive opinions ?

i prefer to see real before and after figures before i jump on the "its total sh1te all it will do is lose you power" bandwagon but at £100 its not cheap so hopefully it will do you some good.
These must be shite. Even salman doesnt sell them.
There was a simaliar thing about 8 years ago, called the "turbozet". Which was given the big one by the company but in reality it was just some innards of a hair dryer.
A test was done on a mk4 xr3i by a magazine, and it was shown to actually lose power. Around 2/3hp and this was at high rpm"s. Just a waste of money....

The drain it will put on the electric supply will outweigh any tiny weeny gains it wont actually give.
Not good, not worth a ton, not worth 50p.

As much as i think these things are pointless... I would be intrigued to see dyno's from before and after.
Not 'it feels loads quicker'... but dyno graphs.

well the theory is sound it's just how much guts the motor has got. it says 12v @ 12watt which is 1amp current so this particular one must be utter-shite but in general I quite like the idea if the right fan is used.

I seem to remember someone saying they use the fans from pc's...
Which would be in no way capable of doing anything. But they may have got better fans these days.

tbh honest though ,in all the cars ive looked at over the years ive never seen these things fitted which tells a story in itself.if they really did work folk would be raving about them as a cheap power increase and we'd see them all the time.

DO any credible tuners make kits like these???
No.
Reason being??
They're complete shite.
I'll sell you a kit that'll turn lead into gold.
Comparable level of alchemy.

well there's nothing wrong with the idea of an electric supercharger - if it's a proper one it will just draw amps from the alternator rather than the crank. the one above seems like a piles of shit if it really only pulls 1 amp.

Then why are there not any in general use ?hoshy wrote:well there's nothing wrong with the idea of an electric supercharger
Pete don't care about colour, He would shag a rainbow if he could find the end of it....

Because other forms of compressing air are more appropriate. Better efficiency, cheaper or longer MTBF perhaps.kam-325i wrote:Then why are there not any in general use ?hoshy wrote:well there's nothing wrong with the idea of an electric supercharger
I'm pretty sure I've heard of electric superchargers being used on at least one production car but I forget what.
*opens google
I also think it's probably important to distinguish something like this that is only likely to give small gains due to aiding the air getting in rather than a true supercharger (electric or otherwise) that actually compresses the air.

my first impression is
followed by total
if you chose to fit one then you are
you'll never get your money back, i'd double that money and put it to a re-map and see propper gains

It's your money, and if you want to put £100 into the hands of a con artist, then you're free to do so!hoshy wrote:Ok - I know this is a controversial topic but I think (just to see and for fun) I'm going to buy one:
The thing consumes 12 watts of power - less than 1/20 HP, so probably contributes about 1/40 HP to moving air. This will have no measurable effect on increasing airflow whatsoever, and at higher revs will probably significantly impede the airflow, reducing power.
If the motor consumed something like 3000W then you might see a positive effect, but not with this kind of power!

yeah i saw a vid on youtube while back where some americans shoved a leafblower in some cars intake pipe lol
it worked tho got some decent dyno results from it.
i agree with you brian, these poxy little fans are going to do nothing but restrict airflow not improve it

I'm inclined to agree with you there Brian - the biggest thing making me not want to buy is lining the bastard's pockets but I'm still interested for the sake of interest.
Agreed that it doesn't draw anywhere near the power I'd expect to see any gains. However, on the air-flow matter I've taken a stab at the maths, based partly on a conversation with ant earlier. Please correct me if I've got anything wrong but here goes:
We'll take the car to be 1800cc, 4cyl and 7k redline. I figure there's two intake strokes per 1 rev, thus 900cc/rev at 7000rpm == 6300000cc/min. At 77% VE (a topic I don't fully understand to be honest) it would need 4851000 cc/min. Converted in to gal/min (thank you mr. google) that == 1281 gal/min. The ad claims that it flows 1282gal/min (suspiciously close to my 1281 admittedly). All of that leads me to thinking that at least will probably not restrict the engine even flat out.
It seems almost obvious that this won't actually create any compression of significance in the intake but might it not improve the overall VE? Helping mitigate some of the losses in the air filter, and perhaps helping get a cleaner charge by aiding evacuation on overlap ?
Most people who've answered so far have just jumped on the FUD band-wagon - I'd like to look at it scientifically not based on hearsay. At the very least it's a good learning exercise.
