325i touring top speed
Moderator: martauto
i was pootling along at 95mph today, like you do, and thought i would just slam the pedal down and was very satisfied to feel the old girl pull like a train! eased off quickly though - mindful of an automatic ban if caught at 100+ besides, of course, it being against the law, irresponsible, bad for the planet etc. etc. I was wondering what top speed others had achieved, understood that this would be on a private track or in the Fatherland and NOT on a UK public road! just as satisfying was that when i got back home and filled up a tankful had returned 29.5mpg!(not all at 95mph tho)Well, what do you get guys????

I nudged an indicated 137mph in my 320i(I've no idea how acurate E30 speedo's are though), the revs were in the red and the car felt a bit light so I didnt stay there long. I have yet to try with the new 2.5 engine but I'd hope it would reach the same without too much sweat.

A bit of both really as the longer the gearing the more power required to pull the revs in top to make use of the gearing.ed325i wrote:The top speed of a car is set by the gearing not the power of the engine.

I think tourings are geared shorter. I may have seen something like 115 on a private road. Once. Perhaps. In safe conditions ;)
There was more available but it would have taken a while to accelerate beyond that and I really don't see the need to take it to the absolute max. 115 was smooth and stable and came up pretty quickly.. which is nice.

gps indicated 130+ @ 7000rpm in 5th... but the gps was in the car I was tailing so I cant vouch for it. It was an indicated 140 on my speedo but I have tiny wheels so that's way out.

according to my GPS if im at 80mph im actually doing 71/72mph, im pretty sure my wheels are same rolling radius(17" with 210/40/17s). my diff is standard 325 saloon non slipper.
therefore if my car indicates 140 i very much doubt its much past 125

i dont trust the GPS or speedo, imo GPS under reads and speedo over reads. a stock 2.5 touring may get to 135 with a long long stright.
fastest indicated speed i've seen on a 2.5 was 146mhp with a 3.64 diff.

no ones doubting it benco, but the point being made is that e30 speedos over read and not 100% accurate
sorry to piss on you fire but you were probably doing about 135mph

nothing to challange about the video, did the base pulse help push you there ?benco wrote:can any one challange my vid

what we are saying is that an INDICATED top speed is NOT ACCURATE, the speedos over read and at that speed possibly by as much as 10mph
any way, i've had 145 in 4th gear in my M3

When I lived in Germany I quite often went to the max in my 325 and id say its about 147 ish give or take, even though its chipped makes no differnece in reality to the top end.
Same here. 80mph on the clock, 71mph on GPS. 205/50/15 tyrestailoutcharlie wrote:according to my GPS if im at 80mph im actually doing 71/72mph, im pretty sure my wheels are same rolling radius(17" with 210/40/17s). my diff is standard 325 saloon non slipper.
Had it pushing past 120 on the clock a couple of times and backed off, but it was still puling. Would be intersting to do a high speed run and be clocked buy proper timing equipment.

the question was asked, and it was answered and most have said speedo readings are incorrectbenco wrote:i never stated my speed was an accurate recorded speed.
evey one before was stating clock speeds
you just stated a speed, and not how it was recorded.
but the subject is top speed, and we'll go by the correct top speed. not BS speedo readings
