Right im a bit confused too, i need to wire up the oil temperature gauge on my m3 cluster, and need some help to do this, so far i got the part number but not too sure what size, and how to go about it.
This part number from Demon Tweeks- Part number MOCTP6
Ive typed this in and it comes up with a few different sizes, which is the correct size for a 325.
and what else would i be needing to wire it up after the right size tee-piece ...

You really need to place the Temp sensor where there is oil flow and a T-piece is far from ideal.
It gets complicated with M20 to do it proper

Sorry demlotcrew but dont understand what exactly to you mean, what do you suggest i do, you saying the m3 temp sensor not going to work. Ive been told to get the m3 temp sensor and replace it with my one.

Andrew is right, you cant really do this properly on an m20.On page one of this thread I have put up some pictures of what i was using. But the temp sender doesn't really work properly as its enclosed in the brass adaptor i made for it.The only other option on the m20 is to put it in place of the sump plug with an m3 temp sender. Not the best place for it but its your only option.
So , 1.get an m3 oil temp sender !
2.Fit it where your sump plug was.
3.wire that pin to the sensor wire PIN 2 on the c6 connection on back of cluster.
Done !

Thanks Buster, but why you say its not the best place for it?
Is that for the m30 one? Or another one?old_skool_2002 wrote:Size needed is M12 x 1.5 for the MOCTP6 tee piece.
As i figure it, You wire the temp sensor into the guage? So why do you all try to go from the m3 guage? Wouldn't the vdo one make the dash clock one null and void?
What about the pressure sender? Where do i plumb that into?
Cheers
The Audi pressure sender goes 'in line' with the existing oil pressure switch using the tee piece mentioned above. I guess you could use an aftermarket sender as the output voltage would range from 5-12V (I'm only guessing here)

Plug but i have a full 'kit' gauge and oil pressure sender (sender is new and both are VDO
) £25 plus post for both.

Ok this is doing my head in now, ive just been to bmw dealers, they gave me this picture to check if this is what i need, i really much doubt that this is what ive been told to get .
I asked him for a oil temp sensor, explained to him that its supposed to go in the sump section but he told me this is the only thing, then he asked me to get the chassis number, well i dont have a e30 m3 chassis number as mines not an m3, so what do i do now and how do go about doing this...

NO - that is the oil level sender i think.
what you need is: E30 m3 oil temp sensor 1261 1 309 193
no your car is not an m3 but then again the guages you are fitting are not factory option either so in this case you are better off researching yourself what you need and going in to the dealer with the part number that you know is correct (the one i just gave you
)
good luck

The reason the guy at bmw said that is because it was never fitted to an m20 engine. And on the m3 it isnt fitted into the sump.
heres the part number for the sensor :
12 61 1 309 193

Hey thanks for your patience guys but im no good when it comes mechanical bits, but hopefully i'll get the right part.
I didnt tell him i was going to use it on my 325, just said its for a m3, but still they want a chassis number for anything you want from there, well from me anyway.
Will keep you updated....

just phone them and state the part number you want and you wont get any problems then. Then just pick it up when it comes in.SHAKEELE30 wrote:Hey thanks for your patience guys but im no good when it comes mechanical bits, but hopefully i'll get the right part.

Or contact Zimmerbimmer on here for it.
Found this for the M30 guys!

Might apply to the m20 people, don't see why not, but hey, worth a shot!

Few more questions regarding the install of these audi gauges.
From what I've read, the best option for temperature is an E30 M3 temp sensor in place of the sump plug.
Then the pressure sensor: why can't the stock pressure sensor from the M42 be used?
I read that there is another "hole" in that area, where a sensor could be plugged. Is it necessary to use the audi sensor or will another vdo sensor work aswell?
Finally, i understand the T-piece "theory", it allows to use both pressure sensors (stock and the one for the gauge). But that will only work with the audi sensor?
Thanks a lot chaps![/b]

you MUST use a matched set of gauges and senders, otherwise you'll be wasting time and money.
M40 and M42 do have an un-used M12x1.5mm takeoff on the oil filter housing, you can take a pressure reading from there.
temp best measured from the sump plug, the stock sump plug is hollow so with care can be drilled at its outer face and tapped to accept an M10x1.0mm thread, alternative is weld an extra boss in the lower sump or split the pressure signal and take the temp from that point too.
The stock pressure sw is on/off, so cannot provide the correct signal for pressure, you need a proper transducer.
OLD thread , well found !

Good thread revival, May I add for the sake of your battery try not to use permanent live feeds when putting your sensers in!?!?

Good info Theo
@ the end of the day, the whole purpose of the gauge is to provide info, correct info seems logical
try your local aircooled VW specialist, its a must have for a tuned Type1/2 engine , they may just have a solution for you.

i was thinking on using this? would this work with the standard audi sensor ?

That's the easiest way of doing it James, but it's not ideal.
I would probably fit a temperature sender housing into one of the oil cooler hoses. This way you are monitoring hot, flowing oil rather than the sump temperature which is always a bit lower. It would however only register on the gauge once the oil thermostat opens.
