Entered my first ever motorsport event on Saturday, in the amateur class of the Eurodrift championship at Teeside. I finished 7th out of 15, and considering I was the only non jap, non turbo car in my class (next slowest car was a 220 brake Cefiro with a 2 way diff!), I don't think I did too badly, even if I was extremely lucky in both qualifying and the final :D

Car was perfect apart from some understeer issues, took bouncing off the limiter for 8 hours in its stride while entering it's 177,000th mile. LSD, however, is fried I think, basically its an open diff now, inside wheel was spinning up like mad - going to stick a welded number in next week and either get it rebuilt, save up for a disgustingly expensive Kaaz diff, or maybe just stick with welder. A few things are pissing me off, such as 2nd gear being too short but 3rd being too long - the welder I'm going to stick in is from a 318 touring, so hopefully that'll make 3rd a bit shorter so I can ignore 2nd. TBH, I'm having dirty thoughts about breaking it and buying an E36 M3 or something Jap, as tuning bits seem so much more readily available and cheaper...or I might just keep it, shove an M30 335 in there and bring the noise. To be fair, I think I need to improve more than the car does, haha! Anyway, only a couple of piccies from my better runs:

Very sexy, is it matt blacked? Are you competing this year too? After that, I'm hooked, but I can't afford to do the Norfolk/Chepstow rounds, can only really do the Teeside ones (its a nightmare being in Scotland!).

The Jap thing is a bit ridiculous to be honest, out of about 40-50 cars, 3 were non jap, and 4 were non turbo - I felt like I deserved a few extra points for originality!. The guys who were 1st and 2nd in the amateur class were using R34 Skylines that I reckon were putting out about 300-350 brake - I felt pretty much useless going up against that :? !

Anyway, plans for the future if I keep it:

M30 335 - more powers for cheap(ish)!
Better diff
A roll cage that hasn't been designed and welded by monkeys
Front and rear camber adjustment (I'm sick of being left with tyres with full tread on the outside and bald on the inside!)
Better rear brake pads (want the hydo handbrake to lock instantly and from cold - anyone got any reccomendations?)
Some custom made coilovers (a mate says he can do this relatively cheaply, don't fancy paying 900 odd quid for some K&W ones...)

im in the irish prodrift series but i cant do the next round due to exams and lack of money

its diamond shwarz..greyish black..

i made rollcage at home..made dash at home..cut springs..welded diff..the lot done and car ready for track is standing me about 4/500 pounds 750 euro..so it cud be seen as a beginers car  ..in my novice class there is seventy..bout 4 bm's a sierra and the rest are jap 300bhpplus cars..

i have no handbrake so its shiftlock all the way until i get time to make a hydraulic one or buhy one..all the more fun with shiftlock

If you want short gears use a 316 diff. And weld it.

Good effort there though, 7th against a load of s-body scum is good work.

I recognise that car! My wing mirror for a start... & it still needs a new front spoiler! :)

Diff off a 316i tourer would be the way forward - I think they came with something silly short?

Good work btw

I vote stick an M30 in there too! All that torque and no turbo lag? With a bti of practice you'll make the jap cars look amaturish!

On a side note: Where/how do you practice? I keep fancying going off somewhere it's safe and learning how to do all of this stuff but haven't a chance ragging around Coventry ring-road!!! I've just fitted an M20 where my M42 used to sit so I have a bit more of a chance.

Cheers for all the kind words guys, I've just seen a video of me in my final runs, and the car looks glacial compared to everyone else, and is understeering half the time and spinning up its inside wheel while I was "drifting". I really had to fight the car, I think it was a combination of my stinky diff, troublesome gear ratios, poverty spec part worn tyres and my real lack of experience. Still, I know I had some great runs during my practice, and its all a learning curve, so I'm not going to feel too bad that it wasn't all my own merit that got me through (lots of people spun during qualifying, and one guy spun in all 3 of his final runs, handing me 7th).

I got the 318 Touring diff out tonight and had a look at it, its leaking pretty badly, I hope its only the gasket but I fear the casing may be cracked (the car was in a roll). Will open it up at some point this week and inspect it, if its fecked I'll be on the look out for a 316 diff :D . The car is pretty much at the peak of where it can be for my budget, I threw daft amounts of money at it over the winter, so suspension wise its in pretty good shape, and I did a few power mods too. All I'm going to do now is throw this welded diff in, as well as an E36 rack and PAS (4 manual turns lock to lock makes neither parking nor drifting fun!). Then I'm going to practice solidly for 2 or 3 months and see how I feel about the car then - if I feel I've improved enough and its going well, I'll keep it and hopefully M30 it, but if I'm still not happy I'll probably scrap it and buy some ready made Jap gayness (good for you guys though, I'll be selling lots of nice bits winkeye ).

My mate has a NA S14 Silvia with a 2 way diff and coilovers, its heavier with less power than the E30, but I can slide it all day - keep it in second, back off as you enter the corner, then adjust your right foot depending on how sideways you want to be, whereas with the beemer I'm frantically yanking on the handbrake and clutch kicking and all sorts, and only doing half as well! Really hope the welded diff is going to be the key!

Buster - it was at Teeside Autodrome/Kart track

Ziggy - was it a track car before you sold it to Olly, or was he the one who gutted it? Shes a beauty, though I'm glad I've had the bushes changed now 8O ! I was moaning about rust before, but now I've changed the front valance theres hardly any to speak of...

Jai - I'm very lucky that I've got Crail airfield about 8 miles down the road from me, every second Sunday they put on a run what ya brung type affair. While all the nobbers in Corsas are busy flinging themselves down the quarter mile, all the people with cars that drive the right wheels muck about on a big figure of 8. Its great for learning on, its really wide and quite long, and quiet enough if you pick the right days. It can be a bit unforgiving if you get it wrong though, theres big tractor and lorry tyres for barriers (which explains why my splitter is stitched together with cable ties and my oil cooler is bannana shaped) and theres big ruts in the field on the other side - not nice to put your car into. But then again, it costs 7 quid for entry, then another 5er for as much sliding about as you/your tyres/car can handle - brilliant value.

Munky - you seen about the Tramp Drift event at Teeside in the Summer?

oooh sounds very good...

I'll be up for that, even though I truly suck at drifting, would be cool to meet up with a few more of the td chaps, get some practice in and get out of the house for a weekend.

I'll have a chat with Mike (steerfromtherear, dirty m535i owner) and get some details.

yeah I know, my insults are just thinly veiled jealousy. Love the fact he's using what some people consider as a classic, to be wrapped in cotton wool and preserved forever in some dusty garage, as a 'abuse it til it breaks' drifter.

Saw him in action at the last southwest practice day (the one where my car comprehensively refused to work after three laps of me spinning wildly) and was very impressed. With his driving and the way the car handled it.

I love e28's and the m535i is one of the best. Used to have a 528 of the same age, unfortunately it was before I even knew what drifting was and all I ever managed was some donuts on gravel. Wish I still had it now, it was a monster.

MJG's matt black E28 is possibly the rudest car I've ever seen, he'd shoved an M30 335 in there too - it looked and sounded absolutely evil. I think its dead now, he was going to reshell it but I think hes having finance/driving license issues, which is a real shame because what I've seen of him drifting hes a very talented chap...

^^ That would be great as I'm considering a similar conversion. It's not the EWS causing a problem is it? No scrap that I've read your thread and it's a non vanos isn't it. Check your DME relay, I loads of grief with one of these in an e36 coupe.

Sorry for the thread hi jack! I shall behave from now on!! LOL
