Last night i was driving home from my brothers house when the temp needle went into the red so i pulled over to find my car had no water left in it 8O My only option at the time was an empty bottle of water and a muddy puddle so i filled the car up to get me home. Well it got me back home (only 4 miles away) and the temp looked fine it was sitting at half way but i had no heaters at all. I took a look this morning to clean the crappy water out and replace it with clean water and coolant. When i was flushing the water out with a hose i saw water pouring out of the water pump area  So what damage have i done

best case nothing, worse case head gasket but you wont know till you get it running again

it seems obvious from your description that the water pump has gone and this is why you have lost your water.

so time to replace the water pump, and whiale you are there change the cam belt/tensioner

then fill it up with normal tap water, run it, bleed it and drain it, repeat three or four times or unitl the water draining out is clear, then fill with antifreeze/coolant, bleed the air out and see what happens, keep an eye on the water level to be sure there are no other leaks and hopefully this wil be the end of your dramas

Very important that when you start the car for the first time after this that you have the heater full on, with the heater fan on about 2 and check that warmish air starts to come from the heater after a few minutes. Also watch the temp gauge carefully at the same time.
Air locks frequently occur after refilling a 325 cooling system, and can result in a cracked head.

I have got a new head ready to go on at some time so i think i will do the head gasket at the same time as the water pump. This will be my first head gasket change i have done on any car so it should be fun :?

Hi there,

I've just done the HG on my 327. I'm not really that great with the spanners but found it quite straight forward!

Good luck mate

dont forget there is a specific way to tighten the head bolts, this must be followed or you will warp the head and knacker it.

All manuals (haines and Bentley) show the correct proceedure.
