Full tank is 62 litres = about 13 gallons before the light comes on. At 25 - 28 MPG, that gives 325 - 364 miles.
I get about 250 miles to a tank, but I only have a 40 litre tank, as my car used to be a 316i, and they have smaller petrol tanks... It costs me about £40 to fill up, so I get 250 miles to £40... My car is also very low geared (original diff as well), so I don't suppose I'm any help either!

Smaller, maybe, but not that small.bimmaman wrote:but I only have a 40 litre tank, as my car used to be a 316i, and they have smaller petrol tanks...
Smaller tank is 55 litres.
I stand corrected.Brianmoooore wrote:Smaller, maybe, but not that small.bimmaman wrote:but I only have a 40 litre tank, as my car used to be a 316i, and they have smaller petrol tanks...

Tank might be full at £35, but it wouldn't have been anything like empty before.

I get at least 22 miles from when the light comes on, havent had the balls to push it any further, one day when I can be arsed I'll fill up a can and keep it in the boot, but have to know I'll be doing a good few miles in one journey don't wanna be driving around with a full can in the boot for long. Driving bomb!

Dont let it run out completely, E30's dont like this. I have heard of people finding it difficult to start after running out completely.march109 wrote:I get at least 22 miles from when the light comes on, havent had the balls to push it any further, one day when I can be arsed I'll fill up a can and keep it in the boot, but have to know I'll be doing a good few miles in one journey don't wanna be driving around with a full can in the boot for long. I get about 240 miles to the light on my normal commute which is a mix of town, fast A-road, slow A-road and country lane thrash. My light comes on at about 12l remaining/50 litres gone. That gives 21.8mpg
On a recent trip to Cranfield I ran most of the way on the M1 at a nice steady 85mph and got 220 miles from 35 litres (I refilled anyway because my fuel gauge is dodgy) which gave 28.5mpg.
My car is burning oil through valve stem seals and really needs a proper remap after the starting/idling/overheating meant it was all readjusted by hand after we pulled a bodged up Lucas relay out of the fuel system (no idea who, or why). So I reckon most people should beat these figures!

I really don't think that working out miles per £ is a good idea. Fuel prices vary, and this thread will be useless in a months time. If you can't work out the MPG, post the amount you put in instead of the price!
HERE is a simple calculator that makes it very simple to get MPG from Litres.

my 1989 325 does approx 310 miles to a tank without light coming on and the obc normally says 32.4 mpg and the calculator gives the same mpg within 0.5 of a mile when i do the miles and gallons conversion. this is based on a 11mile trip to work and an 11mile trip home daily at around 70ish mph..
hope it helps

I have no idea what mine does to the tank but...
I thought I heard someone say that the fuel pump is lubricated by fuel so therefore if you run your car too low you risk damaging the fuel pump, is this right.

I've had over 420 miles from a tank in my 325i touring on a long motorway run. That was from Fishguard in West Wales to London and then a return trip to Bournemouth the following day. And I wasn't dawdling along either. I routinely get 360 miles to a tank when doing my 8 mile town/cross country commute to work combined with a 60 mile motorway trip at weekends. These days it costs me about £45 to fill from the red light coming on to the brim (about 55 litres). The worst I ever had was 290 miles but that was the first week I got it so I was flooring it everywhere.
I went from east sussex to cornwall and i filled up to the brim , Steady drive approx 80 on the motorways and i got 200 miles and i was in the red
Oh and i did east sussex to thurrock meet and back not going mad on £30 and that was round trip of 140 miles
Think i might have problems then , Blowing zaust wont do me any favours

I have also seen over 400 miles out of my 325i cabriolet steady 70-80 mph mostly motorway before the red light came on on normal 95 ron.
On a run to South of France I got 370 miles out of the tank on super at 95-100 with cruise control on all day.
Have also had a lot less though!!!
I ran the car for a month in the summer around 2,000 miles and averaged 30 mpg.

I normally bung in a tenner's worth every time the warning light comes on (prefer generally to run it on a light fuel load to reduce weight, and increase speed/economy). Usually get around 50-60 miles - around the 26mpg mark, unless I'm caning it. On the rare occasions when I drive economically (I find this takes dedication with a 325i...), it's not too hard to achieve 30+ mpg.
