HHMM not good, seems like I have made more work than anticipated. Is it much work taking the engine out and having a go that way, i'm a bit ambitious but should I just shut up and carry on stripping it down while in the engine? what basic equipment do you need to take an engine out? trying to learn from my mistakes and making lots of them!!

If you've unscrewed the head bolts, then the head gasket is now scrap and needs to be changed.
Continue taking the head off and sort it. No need to take the short engine out.
For information, the only special equipment you need to take an engine out is a hoist of some sort to lift it.
Some people have been known to unbolt the front cross member, tops of the struts and control arm bush lollipops, and lift the body off the engine and suspension.

A Short engine is just the block (assembled that is, with pistons crank etc). You won't need to remove this, just the head.
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring

Taking it off isn't a big job, but it helps if you do it in the right order!
Putting it back isn't difficult, but a bit of previous experience helps. It has to be done exactly right, or problems will soon occur.

Look at picture 9.18. The pad on the right slides against the camshaft, and the eccentric disc on the left is the valve clearance adjuster. If the disc is worn at the contact point on the valve, the adjustment cannot be properly made.

Hello lads, back again. Two weeks ago I had enough and decided to put it all back together. Their is a lot of work in this. put everything back except the manifold was missing two bolts. reset the the rocker arms clearence. put water in. started her up and just a blow from the manifold. So if I just reset the valve clearence again and left everything else alone, e.g manifold, large hex bolts on cylinder head she would now be sound. Like brianmoooore said removing these bolts the head gasket is now scrap. Now I have mustered in my engine LOL.

So I suppose I'm going to order a gasket set, Can I get Whole set I.e manifold and head gaskets?

Once I get the cylinder head off is their much work to be done or is it just a case of rubbing down and replacing the gasket, correct me if wrong.

Also putting the head back together I Tightened the spray bar too tight and took a bit of the cylinder away with me. I got some really stong hardening compound and it seems to work, but I might as well replace the head now while I'm at it? Anyone got a cheap head for sale?

Cheers

Dude, why don't you get one of the serious mechanics from the zone to come and do this work for you? They can show you how to do it properly and probably save you cash in the long run by avoiding more damage.
Just a suggestion.
