Hello Oilman !
What about engine oil for here, in New Zealand ?
temps in Auckland vary from abour 5 deg C in winter to over 30 deg C in summer.
My car has 128k miles on the clock, m20b25, standalone ECU, mostly short trips, which means alot of cold strarts with ocasional blast through some open road....
What grade would be most siutable for all year round driving here ?
cheers.

10w-40 10w-50 ideal, best to go fully synthetic if you can.
What brands do you have available to you out there?

common ones are:
Well... we have mobil one full synth 15w50
castron formulaR full synth 10w60
pennzoil full synth 15w50
elf I seen only semi synth
other cheap brands, like BP, valvoline, only semi synth...
we can get stuff like redline/motul/amsoil but it is more expensive than shelf stuff, and i'm not sure whenther extra $$$ is worth it.
Can you commen on group III, IV and V synthtic ? aparently group III is not really synthetic, but just cracked hydrocarbons ? (pennzoil and castrol) and mobil 1 is group IV, and ester oils are like group V and they are used in aircraft engines... I work for an airline, so I can get some aircraft engine oil, but i'm not sure how siutable that would be in m20 bmw....

I wouldnt bother with any group III oils, stick to either group IV or V.
The Mobil, Castrol and Asmoil are group IV, the Motul and Redline are group V.
The ester based group V's are very good indeed, hense why they are used in aviation for there shear stability.
Cheers

The 300v range is group V, the 8100 is group IV except the 8100 0w-40 which is group V.

simon - i use silkolene pro r 15-50 in my track car (325i - 200bhp). track use only. (see www.greenbmw.co.uk) . i am trying to economise a bit as i am burning / loosing a bit of oil. is there anything else i can use that is a bit cheaper ?? what about valvoline racing 15-50 ?? will i get as good a protection. its half the price. also will going to a 15w-60 help - my logic is that it is thicker so will not escape from weaping seals etc.
thanks, jonathan

Well you know the best thing is to have the leaks sorted... you could use the valvoline, ther ewill be no problems but it is by no means in the same league as the Silkolene.
Dont both going to a SAE60, its just too thick, an oil thats too thick can do just as much harm as an opil thats too thin.

'Morning !
I have 2 Tourings, a 320 & a 318i and neither have LSDs.
What grade oil would be recommended for the Diffs?
The 320 has 150k miles and the 318i has 88kmiles in case that is relevant.
Also, what oil volumes do the diffs take ?
Thanks,
Sharknose

Sharknose,
We wou,d suggest a GL5 SAE90 diff oil.
Have a look at the Silkolene BOA90 and the Motul 90pa, most decent diff oils are also suitable for LSD's as well.
Cheers

Hi, slightly O/T but what sort of oil temp' range should the oil be at in the sump of a fully warmed up engine ?
Where am i likley to see the highest oil temps on the motor way or town driving ?
I'm using your Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 in an engine that doesn't have an oil cooler at the moment so i'm kind of wieghing up whether i need to get an oil cooler or not.

The Pro S 5w-40 will run around all day at 120-130degc without dropping out of grade. Sump temp wise anywhere between 70degc and 100degc is the norm.

Depends on use, if driven hard the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 works very well in them.maxfield wrote:What would be the best oil used for a high performance E30 M3 engine?

hi oil man i have a 89 m3 running motul 15w 50 at the mo it is only week end use and not racing it- just a blast now and then. i have noticed that it is burniong it off. i have ordered motul 10 40 is this a better oil for my use? would it stop some of the burning? the engine has never been abused from what i can gather( car is totally clean no dodgy parts on it) but it has got one schrink cam a 280 one i think as the last owner put it in and that what he recons it is? also what gear box oil and diff oil as going changing them all?

Interesting one, no reason why an oil of that viscosity should burn off, a 10w-40 will dissapear quicker as it is thinner accross the temp range.paddyvw wrote:hi oil man i have a 89 m3 running motul 15w 50 at the mo it is only week end use and not racing it- just a blast now and then. i have noticed that it is burniong it off. i have ordered motul 10 40 is this a better oil for my use? would it stop some of the burning? the engine has never been abused from what i can gather( car is totally clean no dodgy parts on it) but it has got one schrink cam a 280 one i think as the last owner put it in and that what he recons it is? also what gear box oil and diff oil as going changing them all?
How much over what mileage is it using?

To be honest that is no major worry IMO.
All engines vary on how much they use, BMW consider anything upto 1ltr per 1000 miles acceptable.

5w-40 full synthetic, BMW approved is best.
Tops would be the Silkolene Pro S 5w-40, followed by the Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40.
