Long time ago but we've been busy with some other things. Have to be done too :(

The day before yesterday we've put the m50 in. We've got a S50b30 waiting but since we need to refresh it and we have test a lot ( suspension, car it zelf and everything ) we are going to use de m50 first.

Flywheel :

Engine ready, including clutch and gearbox

It's still so white 8)

The car was set up a bit to low so screw it up

E30 for dakar :D

Allmost in

Image

Whoops, well it was late, a small mistake

Image

It's in!

Image

Yesterday we gave the brakebooster a bit more space.

Image

Fysically the engine is ready. Now the cooling, wireing and so on has to be done.

Yesterday afternoon we started making some brackets for the radiator. Since the new body hasn't got any it's a bit of work. Lower part is ready now.0

Soon some more I hope :)

These guys definitely deserved a brand new shell for this project. It looks like there's been no expense spared to build a really special car.

This is fantastic mate, welcome to E30Zone

I have seen the pic's of the car before, maybe before you bought it? It was mentioned on here before now when it was for sale, i think.

I will do this one day, it is a great ambition but i wish you all the best! 8)

Question's:

1. Did you alter the height of the engine mount to be able to use the same brake servo?

2. There was a theory about not needing a rear strut brace because of the strength of the 4 door, do you feel different about this, as i was contemplating to buy one or not but had been put off by people saying it was a waste of money on a 4 door but a good improvement on a 2 door.

3. Did you need to alter the size of the tunnel? i've not seen alot of M50B25 gearbox's and that one you've got look's like it's auto  I'm no doubt wrong as this is a race car you are building so i'll keep my mouth shut! :D

2. rear strut braces are a waste of time on an e30 unless they are welded strut to strut due to the rear sus setup

3. tunnel wont be modded

Well the body was for sale in germany but I don't know if he put the ad on this forum at that time.

Your questions:

1. At the moment we use the IX brakebooster. It is a bit thicker but smaller in diameter. The motormount arms are from an e36 and the rubbers from a e28 535i. On the booster side we've a small spacer to clear the room aswell did we take some fins of the intakemanifold. I hope that you understand this a bit, some say my english isn't that bad but i'm not convinced

2. Any strenght is welcome and since we got the strutbraces it's a shame to let them lying around. In combination with the reinforced strutmounts I think it will add stiffness. An e30 body isn't concidered as one off the strongest body's, especially in the rear.

3. As said, the tunnel is standard. We use the e30 transmission crossmember with e21 320i gearboxmounts with aluminium cups under them to make the movement of the engine and gearbox in front and rear direction less.

I agree with the logic that you may as well use it if you have it lying around, sounds good to me. It should be pretty stiff anyway with the roll cage. It's welded in isn't it?

We are absolutly loving this project Tom so please keep it updated, and once again your english is perfect.

Before you fitted the 3.25lsd did you change the friction plates in the clutch pack at all?

The cage is welded indeed. We didn't weld it through to the frontstruts for several reasons. One of them is that when you have a crash and they hit your frontleft corner, instead of having one corner damage, your complete car is out of shape.

Lol, depends on when, in August I'm on vacation. 8)

The differential was rebuilt not to long ago. We will have to test first how it goes.

Indeed, you can asjust the height with that. We got those in the H&R Cup kit.

I hope not bryang!

Yesterday we made some progress again. We fitted the radiator and also the inlet system. The position of the airfilter is temtorary to start the engine. When the rest is finished we will put the filter on the place of the left headlight in a "box"

Image

After that the electric fan was placed.

Connecting the engine wires to the e30 loom.

Image

Then we filled the gearbox and engine with oil. Some electrical controles and builing up pressure with the starter engine without starting. We noticed how the fuelpump didn't sound. After some electricalsearch we found a bad ground. With the completely painted body that was a possible problem, and after fixing it the engine was running. Without exhaust but it still sounded like music to my ears :D I've got a small movie in very bad quality, but maybe fun.

We've got a 3.25, should be okay with the 1:1 5th gear. winkeye

We use the gearbox from the same model e34. Shifter linkage is a different story.

You know it, it felt so damn good hearing that unsilenced engine idle. Especially knowing that the body never had an engine, we didn't know enough about the engine so we did some refreshing on some points but we never knew how it actually would run, and offcourse we've been working a lot and dreaming months of that moment :D

Are the ratios in the E34 gearbox the same as the E36 325 manual gearbox?

WOW 8O now thats a beauty!! you must feel like a BMW works mechanic from the 1980's, hope you are listening to Wham or something similar!!

very good point about not welding the cage in front, that also gives me the impression you intend to drive this thing and not just look at it, RESPECT!!
