Hi

Gotta replace my track rod ends for MOT tomorrow. Anyone have any pointers. Looks simple enough - jack car , lock steering , measure distance, mark with tippex, unscrew retaining bolt and so on. Done an astra years ago so still have my ball joint breaker.
Will then get tracking checked but as with every different motor there usually seems to be a trick someone knows to make the job easier.

Cheers

Easy if the the rod end to track rod threads decide to co-operate (i.e. If the last person to do the job coated everything in copper grease).
If they don't, remove the clamps, and you will see there are slots in the threaded part of the track rod.
Give a good dose of WD40, and, with a very blunt chisel and hammer, try to spread the slots a little. This will break the rust and draw the WD40 in at the same time. Must be done very carefully, so as not to damage the exposed thread in the slot on the rod ends, as any damage to these will damage the thread in the rods when you unscrew the ends.
I usually find they surrender and unscrew after a few goes at this.
There are flats on the track rods just outside of the rubber bellows for an open ended spanner, but usually end up with mole grips.

Hi Brian

Got the job done relatively easily having tippex'ed the threads first and then used a 17mm spanner to "adjust" the track a couple of threads prior to popping the ball joint and unscrewing them.
Passed the mot no probs and the tracking didn't need adjusting either and i'm £150 up over garage replacement, so jobs a good'un!
Thanks for your help! :D

Still a good idea to get your tracking checked though.
Will likely pay for itself in reduced fuel bills and tyre wear.
