1) What car?
2) From hot or cold?
3) Is it cranking, or nothing happens when you turn the key?
4) When it doesn't start, have you checked for spark?

What year 316i? There's a huge difference between a 1987 and a 1988.
And how have you confirmed that power isn't getting to the fuel pump?

If you're sure you're getting spark when you're not getting fuel, then try taking out the fuel pump relay and bridging its terminals.

If that works, then your fuel pump relay was shot.

Final thing is to swap the fuse in case it's soft-blown, and do a continuity test on the fuel pump wire.

Use the bulb to check that there's power at pin 30 of the fuel pump relay's socket (connect bulb between pin 30 and earth).
If the bulb lights, fit a wire link between pins 30 and 87 of the relay base, and use the bulb to check for power at fuse 11 in the fusebox. With most designs of fuses you can touch the bulb's wire onto the fuse wire with the fuse in situ. Otherwise, remove the fuse and push the wire from the bulb into the inner socket.
If the bulb lights here, connect the bulb between the green/purple wire at the pump's plug and earth.
