Basically they lose power rather than gain any. There was a thread a good while back with a fella at colleague who actually dyno tested the standard airbox against a few different filters and from what I remeber none of them was as good as the OEM one.
I can undertand why people want them as the sound is pretty good. But there is no performance gain to be had.

The engine I have now was dyno tested with standard airbox and an expensive sealed carbon wiz bang induction kit and the standard airbox owned it.
So with that in mind if your desperate to have one it makes fack all difference what you get

I didnt beleive the zoners either and called them OEM fags...then i saw the proof in the video below. Put on a cone filter if you want it to rev a bit free-er but its not worth spending money on

I hate the cheesy induction cone my 325 came with and ive still not got round to putting the original air box on but thats what i'll be doing for sure, to be fair it sounds awesome but yea the original one with regulate the air much better, and yea a panel filter might be the way to go if your arsed about trying to squeeze every last bit of bhp!

when i did back to back to back testing it was worth about 3-4%. i then made my own OEM style box but with bigger panel filter and it was worth about 10hp gain at the topend. this is on a modified engine.retroboyo wrote:I've seen cars loose power with a panel filter, not worth doing imho
if your primary purpose is more hp the standard one can be improved without a doubt. The actual assembly is called a silencer by BMW which sheds some light in one of its functions is and the compromises this would cause if outright power was the goal.
unless you keep the air ingested as cool as the factory setup dont bother, the loss of charge density will more than offset any flow gains.
the other thing to consider is the harmonics the airfilter box is a large volume connected via a pipe and there are pressure waves than can be beneficial or detrimental depending on the pipe length, pipe size and box volume. so it is not merely flow and temperature to consider

I do love the way Ausies get the message across.verde wrote:I didnt beleive the zoners either and called them OEM fags...then i saw the proof in the video below. Put on a cone filter if you want it to rev a bit free-er but its not worth spending money on

However seeing as they tested it on a turbo engine I'm not surprised there were little gains as the air gets heated up to buggery in the turbo any way. It’s whether the intercooler is doing its job or not (which it was from the test where they showed the intake temps being higher but the output being the same). IMO the test would hold more water/be more relevant if conducted on a naturally aspirated car.
That was the point though. Theyv done it on loads of different cars turbo ans not turboed and the message is unless ur running huge bhp and boost u will either lose or not notice power gain

Verde have you personally dyno'd an e30 with its' OEM airbox on, and then a K&N 57i? or similar?
The air box design is different for each model, each engine, so this the clue is in that fact.. Remove the air box and it is removing a part which has been designed to provide the best performance.
A performance panel filter maybe, and induction kit, 'an expert on bulls you are not'

I think the K&N does give a slight increase in performance, not something you'd notice though. However to allow the extra airflow that surely means it doesn't filter as much so more particals going through the engine.polsta wrote:where does a k&n panel filter vs an oem paper one or whatever they are made from, fit in ?
Not claiming to have im just going by the results in the video. K and n panel filter in the standard housing appears to be bestBarx325i wrote:Verde have you personally dyno'd an e30 with its' OEM airbox on, and then a K&N 57i? or similar?

I believe that's why they're oiled to catch more particles.Kedge wrote:I think the K&N does give a slight increase in performance, not something you'd notice though. True, but i wasnt defending cone filters.Barx325i wrote:sure, but the car in the video you posted isn't a bmw which was my point..
in fact with a cone type you can easily take a dive in economy too
