It would be interesting to see the results, and also let us know the mixture you have in that cauldron of yours...

Fingers crossed it should be good. Just being in today its burned shed loads off. The mixture is 15 grams of washing soda to a gallon of water. Thats a 203litre bin so approx 650 grams of powder.

Hmm...I wonder if it would work to strip paint off of steel wheels?

I got a quote of £20 + VAT per wheel to get them shot-blasted, which seems a bit steep, as I have five to do, so that's £120 even before I've painted them...

I don't know mate. It seems to be attacking the rust, without taking off any of the paint, I'm not sure if it would if you substituted washing soda for caustic soda. Brian would be the guy to ask i recon.

yeah, it won't take paint off, unless there's some rust under the paint (which with steel there quite often is, even if it's not enough to actually be visible) so some paint will come off, but it won't strip it as such.

i had a go myself, just a small tank at the moment to see if it worked. certainly had some rusty residue and some fizzing, but havent left it on anywhere near enough yet. come the weekend and i'll do a couple of days worth.

don't think my battery charger is really up to it, but if i can get encouraging results i might invest in a better power source.

quite like the thought of adapting different containers for specific jobs, i.e i have an engine lid for the camper which has some rust along the bottom edge, i'm thinking use a section of pvc guttering and just submerge the grotty bottom couple of inches of the cover.
cheers,

harry

This. The process only attacks rust. Nothing else is affected, unless it's soluble in water.

Diffs. can be submerged right up to the vent on the top, as long as the seals are good.

This is a spare calliper carrier which has been fizzing away for a couple of hours

Very very Heath Robinson, will make something a bit more solid and permenant at some point!

Right these are the results so far. There are some kind of before and after shots of how its eating the rust. Fair play great system for rust removal.
