Rear tyre wear problem
Moderator: martauto
Discovered today theres an issue i need to sort
325i sport lowered on jamex springs and had 17" wheels, sold the wheels today, in taking them off (1st time ever had them off) there was heavy wear to the rear inner edges of the tyres, drivers side was a bit more than the other, and in places had canvas thread showing , wear was right on the "corner" if it were, of the tred
i have no idea about this sort of thing and need it fixed, having a little google to find out info
is it because it was lowered with 17" wheels ?
camber or toe ?
worn bushes ?
damaged trailing arms ?
just need to be taken to a place with lazer alighnment ?
has anyone had/fixed this before ? apriciate any advive on how to go about it
car is now back on 15" wheels

When you lower an E30, It increase's the camber on the rear wheels.
Size of wheel makes no difference to the wear on the inside of the tyre.
you can correct the camber by modifying the rear beam to enable the adjustment of the rear camber.

ok thanks, so as thought..previous owners lowered it, put the wheels on, and not bothered to get it ajusted at all ?
so whats the best wat to go about it ?
get the new ebach springs on, then get it all ajusted once on ? , is that all i need to do ? how is it ajusted ? via somewhere with a laser alignment hunter system ?

Jamex are terrible springs, sadly they "sink" over time but that doesn't make them progressive !
coupled with worn bushes is probably the reason why...

There is no adjustment in the rear, only by using thicker spring pads to raise the height and reduce camber. To get any adjustment you need to take the beam off and have the arm mounts modified.polsta wrote:ok thanks, so as thought..previous owners lowered it, put the wheels on, and not bothered to get it ajusted at all ?

If you want a lower an e30 you either modify the beam so you can reduce the camber, or put up with it and get the tyres turned occasionally.
17in wheels can make the wear worse as there's less sidewall to flex and take up some of the angle.

luckily i had already planned on replacing those, how exactly do i check the bushes ? , is it a case of just takign the car to my mates garage and say wack it up on the ramp and check them for me ?
what sort of labour time is involved to change them ? or if i bought a whole kit and changed the lot ?
also any advice on what bushes to buy ?

ok thanks harry, the 17" were low 40 profile aswell , rest of the tyres looked new ,very heavy wear on that very outer corner
so its probably-bushes,new springs, 15" wheels, and alignment, should fix it ?

I'd expect the inner edge to be warn.polsta wrote:ok thanks harry, the 17" were low 40 profile aswell , rest of the tyres looked new ,very heavy wear on that very outer corner

My car was all standard; no big wheels, no lowering, and I still got inner tyre wear on one side.
You need to refresh all the major suspension bushes, as listed in the Wiki:
http://www.e30zone.net/e30zonewiki/index.php/Bushes
(mine was just on the rear, so those are the bushes I've done).
That should fix it, but if you insist on lowering the car, you'll just have to put up with the tyre wear.

What are the fronts like ?
If they are OK it could be that the alignment on the front was a mile out and the "good" wheels from the back were swapped to the front.
Get it rebushed and some proper springs on anyway

e30topless said : Proper BMW's have 4 headlights, last of the run was the E30 and E34/E32 anything after that is just complete shite
fronts were fine rob , even nice wear , rear drivers was at a state it needed to be replaced/dangerous
they were new earlier in the year, along with the jamex springs, and 1st time id ever, or by looking at them and the bolts and caps/fittings, that theyd been removed since fitting by the look of it
dan, how much is that set up ? although i dont like "slammed" and dont want the ride too low, i jsut want it like my old is, which had bilsteins, ebach slight drop, and had no problems with tyre wear, would i need one of them for that ?
il get the ebach ordered soon as, and get the car to my mates ramp and all the bushes checked to see if any need replacing or what/if any have been replaced etc and see what needs doing, as hopefully it might just be the trailing arms bushes or something and others ok, as i cant do bushes myself il have to get it done and pay the labour so doing them all might be costly ? (anyone know a roughly how long time wise to do them all ? )

To mod your beam, sandblast and powder coat afterwards = £150 or you can pay me a deposit if you dont have a spare and want to send me yours back after fitting.
Big job really changing all the rear bushes, removing the rear arms is a few hours work and you have to consider possible brake pipe replacement, is the handbrake cable going to come apart ok etc etc.
Always best in the long run to do the whole lot at the same time. Do it right do it once

i agree with DanThe if you are running after market springs regardless of the make or the amount of drop fit an adjustable rear beam. this is the only way to get your wheel alignment back to original settings. and its way cheaper than OE springs.

Polsta, I replaced all trailing arm bushes and both beam bushes 200 miles before you bought the car from me. The rear tyres were not new when you had the car, infact they may well have seen quite a bit of use, the fronts were brand new though.
excellent, thats good to hear !! nice to see you on here mategriffith500user wrote:Polsta, I replaced all trailing arm bushes and both beam bushes 200 miles before you bought the car from me.
