Hi Comp engines
Moderator: martauto
Pretty certain the answer is nothing!
Some car spares websites distinguish the different motors by their power outputs, especially in Europe where the bhp figure is on the vehicle documents, but the difference is 1 bhp ! (171/170)
These are sensations as hard to forget as they are to ignore.....
big difference in they way they drive though certainly a big diff between my previous high comp and my current lower one.
Someone else made a similar comment on here a while back and the forum regulars assured that the difference has much more to do with the difference between the Motronic versions than the compression.kevo wrote:big difference in they way they drive though certainly a big diff between my previous high comp and my current lower one.

May also be to do with the fact that most high comp engines are in prefacelift cars which i've seen mentioned tend to be lighter than the facelift E30s.
My old bronzit was E reg 1988 early face lift and hc engine. Drove differently to the one I have now.

How's that work, thought the change from 1.1 to 1.3 wasclipper wrote:Someone else made a similar comment on here a while back and the forum regulars assured that the difference has much more to do with the difference between the Motronic versions than the compression.kevo wrote:big difference in they way they drive though certainly a big diff between my previous high comp and my current lower one.
supposed to be a step forward, on a pre facelift engine.

I dunno, I was just repeating what someone else said in a previous discussion about the difference between high / not so high comp motors. I think it was due to the more progressive and user freindly mapping of 1.3 Motronics which give the impression of a softer power delivery.gooner1 wrote:How's that work, thought the change from 1.1 to 1.3 wasclipper wrote:Someone else made a similar comment on here a while back and the forum regulars assured that the difference has much more to do with the difference between the Motronic versions than the compression.kevo wrote:big difference in they way they drive though certainly a big diff between my previous high comp and my current lower one.

I've only ever had a chromie with high comp and early Motronic so I can't even give an opinion on the difference, percieved or real.

It's a big step forward, best thing you can do to a high comp is fit 1.3. It's like chipping it and then having room to map it again.gooner1 wrote:How's that work, thought the change from 1.1 to 1.3 wasclipper wrote:Someone else made a similar comment on here a while back and the forum regulars assured that the difference has much more to do with the difference between the Motronic versions than the compression.kevo wrote:big difference in they way they drive though certainly a big diff between my previous high comp and my current lower one.

The same situation for me, Clip.
Will be able to comment on the Motronic change soonish though, hopefully.

bss325i wrote:Right, it transpires that,
256E1 compression ratio of 9.7:1 (early motronic)
256E2 Compression ratio of 9.4:1 (late motronic)
256K1 Compression ratio of 8.8:1 (late motronic, cat prepped or with a cat)
For UK cars,
256E1 sept '85 to sept '87
256E2 sept '87 to june '88
256K1 june '88 to end of production.

don't you have to change something on the fly wheel and have a lambda sensor added to the exhaust for the 1.3 upgrade?
let us know when you do, nice onegooner1 wrote:clipper wrote:

Will do but as i'm currently rebuilding mine into a 2.8, you would be probably be better doing a search on conversions
already carried out. Lot of conflicting advice as to which parts are needed though.
