well, I feel dead chuffed with myself as I've managed to achieve so much on my 325i today and thought I'd share. not done any of this before but not too shabby with a spanner either!

started by draining the gearbox oil and replenishing. not sure of an easier way to top it up apart from squeezing the hell out of the bottle as the angle isn't great :D

then moved onto the power steering, had a peek in the reservoir and it was black so drained that, bled it a few times and voila, smooth steering again :D

changed the air filter and spark plugs.

needed to replace a bulb in the dashboard so took steering wheel and column shrouds off to get access to dashboard cluster. took various fasteners and screws off to be able to get the cluster out. bit fiddly but got it sorted in the end. think that was the hardest bit! oh and if anyone read my other post about squeaky steering wheel, sorted that too :)

only a few things left to do really. need to change oil filter but waiting for that to arrive monday. the only other bits are cosmetic but still waiting for quotes on those. after taking it for a test drive I felt so happy as it felt like I really achieved something :D

I did my Master clutch cylinder yesterday and replaced my fuel filter too.
I would recommend the fuel filter if it has never been done.

My wife claimed that she MUST have the touring to use for work and shopping last Friday(I wieghed the Toyota in a week or two back!)so I showed her how clean the interior was and told her I expected it back in the same condition....

I was very disapointed!

Fuel filters easy enough to remove, it's a case of some jubilee clips to come off.
M ake sure you crip the fuel lines though, and have a catch can ready for the petrol in the filter.
Located just in front of the NSR wheel.

For refilling gearboxes and diffs you can buy oil syringes from most motorfactors for under a tenner which hold 500ml at a time and makes the job a lot easier.

Nice one E30lou - I have a clutch slave cyclinder change coming up I think based on the weeping from the g/box bellhousing. But today I mostly cleaned the interior... very satisfying.

Rav - what benefits have you noticed since the fuel filter change? I don't think mine has ever been changed.

Kemlo,
Mine had never been done 8O , I never did it for the last 14yrs
If it hasn't been done on yours, the petrol that comes from the olf filter will be BLACK as mine was.
Car used to hunt around, but now it's alot smoother, and hopefully abit better on fuel too. :D

DanThe's post did make me spit out a mouthfull of tea though!

Before you change the fuel filter, start the engine and pull out fuse 11 (fuel pump) with the engine running, then turn off the ignition when the engine stops.
This will remove most of the 3 bar pressure that the fuel line and filter has in it.

I've got a long length of rubber hose with a funnel stuck in the end. I feed it down from the engine bay and fill it from above. It is a bit tricky to know when it's full, as you can't see the fill hole from above.
