A (rather obvious) word of warning

My first snowy winter (or any winter come to that) with the E30....disaster of a morning trying to get the old girl onto roads with a 10-15cm thick blanket of snow....

...wheels were spinning, passing children and motorists (and, most importantly my E30) were in danger of being mangled....

....and any sort of incline, no chance.

Lets keep our E30's parked-up safely in our garage's/drives this snowy winter for both our saftey and the cars. Get your front-wheel-drivers out...an unexciting Corsa, in my case.

...I did have one incident, however, the girlfriend backing her car straight into my front-wing (as my white more-door doesn't show up that well amongst the white stuff!)

E30s + snow = danger.

Tedswagon's got the snow tyres on his 325 coupe and says that they are great, the obvious solution if you need to use your E30 in the snow.

i will not take my e30 out in the snow even though i like to go sideways on occasion!! but with cambered roads ect the wheels light up and the back end will follow any camber and hit anything parked on the side of road!
oh an another thing, i live in s.wales and my town is a mass of hills, my m50'd e30 would be an absolute nightmare in snow, last year i bought a £200 corrola with tax and mot to use just for the snow,, i went everywhere with the handbrake on!! it was epic

Yes, but next to nobody uses them as they think that summer tires are fine for everything other than thick snow/ice (which is incorrect I know and winter tires should be used in any cold weather season)

Bearing that in mind, people are not willing to spend money on extra wheels and tires for winter use, as all they think is that they only need them for the snow, which at best, lasts for a few weeks in the UK.

More and more people however are coming round to the thought of them when they are increasingly becoming stuck in the bad weather we are now getting winter after winter.

Our government does a poor job of educating people of the value of matching your vehicles tires to the appropriate season in comparison to the rest of mainland Europe and the USA/Canada.

What about snow chains - anybody used these - might be a stupid question but do you need them on all four wheels or just the rear?

i would say that chains would have to go on the front aswel as the back or else you would have major understear when the back grips!

I was extra careful in my Sport last year as at the time it was my daily diver when we had all that snow. Didn't stop a Transit van coming around a corner too fast and nerfing me in to a wall though

Just dug a guy out from the front of the office - revving the nuts off it, smell of rubber terrible - he didnt know if it was front or rear wheel drive - Astra (FWD) - I mean seriously thats whats out there - how are they meant to drive if they dont know the basics.

I've always found driving an E30 in the snow easier than any FWD i've had, my Leon was struggling pulling out of junctions on the way home this morning with just a slight incline.

Might be tempted to insure the touring and take it out for some fun once i've finished tonight

my e30 seems ok in the snow. better than my 07 diesel type-s civic i had the last few years. i think its due to having smaller higher profile tyres on the E30 (17"civic wheels vs 15" bbs). i got stuck outside my house in the civic so bad you could leave it in gear and get out the car with the wheels still spinning on the spot. very annoying!

but last year i bought a winter car for the snow. a 1996 vw polo and it was amazing in the snow! light and low powered! i did smash a curb but i didnt care and bought a new wheel and tyre for a tenner off ebay! sold it in the spring with £120 profit:)

on the chains thing i have bought a set of autosocks

cost £68 which are cheaper than chains and i have them in the boot if i get stuck. and the best thing is that they take 2 mins to fit and they wont damage the car when driving with them.

will be interested to see if they make a difference.

I agree with bennysotc on this one, my car control is really up there! I'm trying not to be bigheaded on this one but my point is as his.... Its 90per cent of the general public on the road I don't trust. You can be an awsome driver but some dickhead can just plough into you and that's it I'm afraid, its game over cos like said in other posts, even a dented wing and headlight (all be it minor) is e30 right off, do not pass go, no £200!!! And that's a risk I'm not taking with mine.
Maybey get hold of a 200-300 e30 and frag it once snow has cleared off

Front wheel drive cars were a novelty when I passed my test so we had to learn how to cope in all situations.
I drove to work this morning (5.10 am )in @ 5 " of snow andhad no probs ,316 M10 auto.

Having inspected the damage...it turns out my thick-shelled E30 won the day...

...just a slight nick to the front wing which good'ol T-Cut should take care of, no probs...whereas the girlfriends Corsa has a pretty handy sized dent and a cracked rear windscreen...

smug is probably the wrong way to feel (given that she is my girlfriend)....but that I am!

Hmm.. managed it to work today, taking it slow and steady but I do agree about the other drivers... Particularly those who have massive 4x4s and think that because they have an off road car they can drive as if it was summer!

Problem is for some of us the E30 is the daily driver, and there is no other car available to choose from... so when it's completely covered with the stuff tomorrow, I've still got to trundle to work and try not to die.

Had to use the E30 today in the snow.... never again.... what a nightmare... even though i like going sideways, its just way to dangerious towards others. I live in a very tight and hilly area, so makes it very hard.

drove my e30 today in light snow..i was thinking sod this caper again, i leave for work at 9pm come home 3am...hard going in the winter , although the best thing is the roads are dead so not like rush hour !! drove it all last winter -my 1st ever winter on the road too...didnt do badly !!!

The Touring is our cheap and cheerful run about, I'd rather be out in that when there is an increased risk of people crashing into you than in the 6er.

After last year I wanted to give winter tyres a try so I bought 4 Kumho KW23's for £150 delivered! These have gone onto sme 15" BBS that I bought from Adit for £120 and had refurbed for another £150. To put them onto the 6er would have cost over £1100 for tyres alone so a bit of no brainer.

where did you get your bbs re-furbed? i tried lots of places but kept getting quoted silly money for them
