Anyone know the syptoms of a warn out gearbox? When the car is in idle there is a knocking/rattling sound but when i press the clucth halfway down it goes... Think i have read on here that its a gearbox problem..is it a replace only or something smaller job. Thanks..

That'll be wear in the layshaft. Its a common symptom on E30's. It could well go on like this for ages.

Has anyone bothered getting their noisy input shaft bearing replaced?

Is it worth doing, if you can source a known-to-be quiet secondhand 'box?? I'm sure I read somewhere that E30 Getrag 'boxes have been known to be noisy from new.

I got quoted £500 to rebuild a 325 cr sport box. . .

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

Once my 'box runs-up the white flag, I'll be replacing it with a c/r 'box. But what I'll probably do is;-
1) Make sure I can test it before I buy it
2) If there's any doubt about the input shaft bearing, get my local transmission specialist to replace it for me.

I can reassure you it's a worthwhile upgrade
