cheapest way to cheap insurance is to move out of UK.
320 cab 100quid
540 sallon 80 quid
325 saloon 80 quid
here they insure the car (only allowed 3rd party on cars older then 5 years) 80 quid for saloon, 100 for sports cars (320 a sport car!! cough cough!) and 120 quid for 4x4 easy peasy!

I cannot believe the average rozzer can tell you have a 2.5 engine under your hood. I'd be amazed if they could even tell it was 6 pot instead of 4.

Alot won't agree but I think you should be 21 before you can drive(or at least a powerful car). I remember when I was 17 thought I "knew it all" and really looking back I knew "fack all"
Thing is with motorbikes (where I started on the roads) I had a Yamaha FZR600R when I was 18 and it was deristricted when I was 20 (2 year period) and I can put my hand on my heart and say I was far too immature to have anything with that power in my possession and ride it legally.
I never compromise on any mod or insurance, everything is declared. Since I sold my Aprilia RSVR I never really speed either! Just watch "traffic cops" tonight and every noob on there had a "modified car" a "whats your problem, I ain't done nothin" attitude and were all total bellends... I know thats no fun but what right do we have to put other people in danger with powerful undeclared (modified) cars and stupid behaviour?

I'm stunned that you got away with it and that you been insuring it as a 316i. Your lucky that you were pulled and didn't get involed in an acident as you would have been in some deep water indeed.
Some classic insurance companies will insure you at 20 but most are 21-25 and Lancaster would only give me a policy on a e34 M5 when I hit 30. There are heaps of threads on here about insurance and like the others on here have said , if you can not afford to pay the premium for the car then run something else. Danthe has to deal with some big premiums because due to his car is proper weapon, but for an converted 2.5 I would not be prepaired to pay that massive amount when a 325i is cheaper.
Could you not run a shitter untill your 21 and then look into getting a classic policy? I remember my premiums got loads cheaper when I hit 21 , 25 and 30.

I passed my test age 19. Did not get my own car till i was 21. All my cars are in my own name.

So, what are the Police doing now? Did they take photo's or take the engine number, etc? IMO if you were going to get grief they would of took the car.

ok so they let you off with a warning, [very lucky] as they could have took the car off you till you got the right insurance within 14 days or it went to the crusher, my advice to you is change the engine back to a 316 till you can insure it, or dont drive it till you can pay the money, be a shame to see you lose it to the crusher.

now i ain't a saint (never have been never will be) as at the age of 16 i was riding around lincolnshire on a GS1000 knowing full well i was in the wrong & if i got court they would throw the book at me (& smack me round the head with the shelf it was on) untill one day my luck ran out & i got stopped, the copper knew my family & told me in no unserten (sp?) terms that if i din't get rid of the bike & give up riding till i had passed my test then he would make sure it went to court & i would get everything they could throw at me.
i've paid through the nose for insurance for the last 17yr's to keep ANY car i've had legal & made sure ALL mods were declared no matter how small they were.
as someone said earlier what if you had hit someone & killed them???

How many have done similar or even broke the law?? this morning for instance - I have used the phone to book on for work whilst driving, didn't wear a seat belt, did more than 40 in a 30 and dodged a red light and that's before I get home later so double it.
If somebody would of stuck a 1275 engine in my 1000 Mini years ago, I would of sucked em off for the privilege !!
Let's be honest, we don't know much about the op but he's put an M20 in and not declared it, it's a 22 year old engine for christ sake, a Toyota Yaris could burn it off at the lights !
Hands up to those who declare everything?? Who in the right mind would declare a set of BK Penis reps, a short shift from a Z3 and a head unit that could light up Wembley!!
Give the lad a break, he's done wrong and is now fully aware of the situation, everyone becomes wiser with age - I have

some where above it says its cheaper to just buy a 325, wnt it be cheaper if he changes the 316 on the v5 to a 325 and then try insuring it again, becuase im sure its cost free to change details on the v5 and then he wont have to mess around looking for another car, ive got a sport 21 with 3 points direct line insured me for about 500 i added my old man as a named driver it brought my insurance from 1200 for myself to 500,

So what's the opinion on OEM mods? I.e. E46 top mounts?

Personally I wouldn't bother, because they are not a performance enhancement, they just break less often. The risk you run in declaring those is you get lumped in with "modified suspension" and they may not have a category for "anally retentive maintenance item"
I don't know the legal implication but I would have a clear conscience. You would have to check with your insurer.
I declared my rogue engineering topmounts but along with lowered springs, shocks and rollbars it all cost me about £80 a year with Direct Line. The only thing I didn't bother declaring was the BBS wheels instead of bottle tops but it might well have had them from the factory anyway. To cover my arse properly I suppose I should really get the original build sheet and declare the swap if necessary - but I really don't think it will cause an issue.

A 316 will always be a 316, even if you inform the dvla that there's a 2.5 lump in it. The model number stays the same but the engine capacity and number is amended, so it's still a modified car.

I ran a 6.6 Trans Am when i was 22. Had it for 18 months, and never insured it or taxed it. Stoopid as fook, and wouldn't do it now, but when you're young you don't always think clearly.
Hat off to the police for not robbing the car, and at least giving the lad a chance to make right the situation.
You have to be careful these days, you can't get away with things like you could in the 80's/90's

I enquired about this when I did my engine swap, The cc and engine number's are easy. To change the mark of the car ie: 316 - 325 you need a letter of conformity and a report from the manafacture. A lot of people on here probably haven't declared any modifications. My mate made the mistake a few years a go he is still paying for the damage he did. I think it was £24k.
I haven't declared anything to my insurance only due to the fact I have a traders policy and I'm covered on any car for business/SD&P use. I just haven't declared it to the DVLA.

what about a blacked out kidney grill? anyone declared that?
eccentric bushes?
cloth comfort seats swapped out for sports?
leather swapped in?
what if your obc broke and you put the analogue clock back in?
smileys fitted instead of prefacelift sealed beam type?
iv painted the black bumper trim on mine red, do i have to declare that?
strictly any change from standard spec is a modification so they could winge about all of the above, anyone asked about stupid anal stuff?
edit: on a less anal note, what about those of us that have blown 4.11 small case diffs up and only had 3.64 medium case diffs to replace it with?

insurance screw you either way! either declare things and pay the price or don't and run the risk!!!

I've got my leather interior (originally cloth) listed as a modification. Why not? Cost me a lot, so I'd want to see that reflected if the car was nicked

yeah on second thought the cloth to leather is a no brainer if you can afford to pay the premium increase, but say you scrap a car with them in so the seats cost you nothing?
personally i hate the feel of leather so its a non question for me, just curious on peoples thoughts.
oh an not declaring a 4pot to 6pot swap is asking for trouble, it only takes a quick glance to spot that one, even my ex mrs could have spotted that.
will be interesting to see what happens with this, as i know of a couple of people at uni "getting away with it" on more modern cars,
theres a lot of people going "ohh you will get this and that" but theres very few examples of this is what happens cause it happend to me out there.
this is always a topic that fact gets diluted with opinion.

The diff mod may be worth mentioning...especially if it is in that direction as it slows the acceleration and, in the eyes of the insurance company, may be safer and reduce your premium...
But I'm willing to bet that so long as the replacement diff is an E30 one, then not even an engineer will tell the difference or know what it left the factory with...

when police check if the car is insured on the MIB (motor insurance database) it would have shown up as having insurance, but they obviously dont know about any declarations, which are listed seperately on the policy.
Thats why they didnt take the car there and then under operation reclaim for not having insurance, but as he stated in his post, the police said that they will follow this up !!!! They will check with his insurance company if he is insured to drive a 2.5 and when told that he isnt !!!!!
They will knock on his door and either arrest him for driving with no insurance or issue hime with a FPN (fixed penalty notice) and summons him to court

probably not...however, as it is a non-performance enhancing mod that could be seen as potentially safer, I'd consider declaring that...may even reduce your premium!smileys fitted instead of prefacelift sealed beam type?
again, not worth bothering with...iv painted the black bumper trim on mine red, do i have to declare that?
strictly any change from standard spec is a modification so they could winge about all of the above, anyone asked about stupid anal stuff?
edit: on a less anal note, what about those of us that have blown 4.11 small case diffs up and only had 3.64 medium case diffs to replace it with?
The diff mod may be worth mentioning...especially if it is in that direction as it slows the acceleration and, in the eyes of the insurance company, may be safer and reduce your premium...
But I'm willing to bet that so long as the replacement diff is an E30 one, then not even an engineer will tell the difference or know what it left the factory with...
