Normally the guage should have been well on the red area before the light comes on. It's not down to the car being crap that it ran out of fuel. You have admitted already you should have petrol in earlier.

If your car was a 2009/10 example that would be a fair bitch, but its probably not wise to trust a 20 odd year old tank/fuel system/sender to perform the same. Bottom of the tank could be full of all sorts of crap, bits of rust etc. Treat the 1/4 full mark as absolte empty.
Selection of BMW hardtops available, please ask!

Check the back of the clocks for the nut being tight on the fuel and temp gauges!
my one kept showin half a tank..then empty...then half a tank..then empty..
took the clocks off and low and behold NO nut on the back!

i think you might be in for a shock when you try and restart it. i ran out of fuel the other week and had to get a new fuel filter, fuel pump and replace half the flexy fuel lines (and jubilee clips) becuase they were foooked

On the other side of the coin,my Touring is consistently low on petrol and i've ran out more times than I care to remember,in 8 years I've only replaced the in tank pump once, and that failed due to corrosion,i've never replaced any other part of the fuel system and covered 105,000 miles
I think it's a bit of a phallacy that crap gets sucked up through everything if you run out, there is of course a gauze on the bottom of the pump to prevent this and further filters to remove particles.

S'funny, I also seem to run my touring a lot on the red light!
I get exactly 25 miles when the petrol light is solidly lit
I did of course find that figure out the hard way, having previously just owned a car that gave me about 50 miles in the red!! I know it's not good for the car to do it! I'm a Bad, bad, naughty person...

OK,here's how mine spends most of it's life, note the car is running so the guage is where it should be.
Pick one is 30 minutes ago before I picked my son up,and pick two is when I arrived home, note the mileage differnce.
My fuel light gave up the ghost a long time ago!

Now thats running the gauntlet!

I've never run out but I've had the serious shakes a couple of times before coasting into a forecourt. I can tell when it's getting close because my fuel pump changes pitch.

Petrol is lighter than water and according to That Which Is Never Wrong (wikipedia) it ranges from 0.71 to 0.77 kg/l so... taking 0.75 as a handy medium the fuel in a full 62 litre tank weighs 46.5kg.a8dyc wrote:1kg per litre...........................dont quote me on it though.
