been having clutch issues recently.

sometimes the bite point is normal, sometimes it is just off the floor and sometimes it wont let me take it out of gear. but then it will just go back to normal the next time it is depressed.

it used a lot of fluid, i refilled it and it kept doing it but didnt use fluid.

i bled it through a bit, to no avail.

any ideas?

there is also black gunge in the clutch resevoir.

Most likely the master,I had a similar issue with project cabbie when I first started to use the thing.
I had fitted a new clutch master right at the start of the project because the carpet was soaked with fluid...so I fitted a new slave,no better,in reality it was getting worse quickly!
So I fitted another new master and it has been perfect ever since...
I too found black lumpy bits in the fluid container, but could not decide if they were body filler sandings or bits of a seal...as I have had no problems with the brake system I feel that they were most likely to be bits of a failed master cylinder seal, but there again I bled the brakes through with new fluid and fitted new flexi's,calipers and a fair amount of hard line AFTER the bodyshop work!
Clutch slave/master are not expensive via GSF,and general zone advice is to change both at the same time.

If your loosing fluid and its not obvious where its coming from it will either be the slavve cylinder leaking into the bell housing and eventualy run out between the gearbox and engine.
Or the more likely its the master cylinder and its coming out the top and running down under the carpet. Not good news if it is because it will eventualy rott the carpet and paint underneath.

If you get a replacement from GSF or euro car part go for the more expensive one made from steel and steer clear of the cheap ally one. That has a dodgy slotted washer in the top that digs into the cylinder wall and blows the seal again. in my case within a month :?

Although i think they stopped making those now but you never know with them, they still try to sell wings that will never fit

If you change one cylinder change the other one as well, the increased pressure of a new master usualy blows the slave soon after.
There is NO nucleus.
