Under what circumstances are the lights in the switches lit up?

Patience! Anyone been messing around behind the glovebox area? Either a plug has become disconnected there or fuse 17 is blown.
There is a blue relay behind the glovebox which switches the power feed for the roof and windows when a front door is opened from an ignition switched feed from fuse 21 to a permanent live feed from fuse 28. This relay should operate(click) whenever a front door is opened, so if it only works with the passenger door you have a second fault, probably with the pin switch in the driver's door hinge pillar.

nobody has been near the glove box and no work has been done recently that could relate to a problem, checked fuse 17 and checked the relay plug and wires both are fine, also just had both door pins out cleaned up electrical connectors and and the contacts on the plug ends and all seems fine, should i be checking for power anywhere and if so what for? thanks.

You should be checking for ignition switched power on the white/black wire plugged into the accessories socket, that goes to the blue relay.
just checked and i have no switched live at the black/white wire for the blue relay, also going beck to the secondary fault at the drivers door pin this seems to be working fine as its turning the interior lights on, i can hear a reley clicking down behind the speaker on the drivers side when the pin is operated is this correct!?

The relay should click when the first of either front doors is opened.
Pull out relay K5 in the fusebox, identify pins 30 and 87 of the socket, and link them together with a piece of wire. Try the windows again. (Ignition won't need to be on.)

Relay should click when you open a front door, whether or not the ignition is on. If it only clicks when you open the driver's door, the pin switch in the passenger door pillar probably needs attention.
