Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but thought I ought to vent to people who are likely to be sympathetic! I've long wanted an E30 and have just decided that I'll get one in the next year. Before I started looking around I thought I better do some insurance quotes.
Agreed value £1,100, 318, 28 year old male, no convictions, no accidents, no claims, 9 year driving license. I haven't got any no claims yet because I've been a named driver on my girlfriend's Focus for the last 5 years. This would be purely a practical classic used for pottering around, maybe 2,000 miles per year.
Cheapest quote... £980!!!
I think its because I went GoCompare.com, and maybe I need to phone some specialists, hopefully they might give me a few years no claims. I know when my mum learnt to drive 20 years ago, my dad's insurance company automatically gave her 10 years. Nice!!

I was quoted £159 fully comp, plus the wife (for the drunken nights only) on a 325i cab with 3.5k miles a year, had to be insured on a second car to get this price, Lancaster Insurance is the name.
@Parabola.
Two reasons. 1, no claims bonus. You haven't had your own policy active which doesn't help! 2. Location? Where do you live?
And a third. Never use go compare. They have to make money somehow dont they
Maybe use it for an idea, then go get quotes from the listed insurers directly and then demand cheaper. Dont even mention GoCompare.
But bloody hell, £980 for a 28yo in a 318i? I was paying £350 p.y fully comp with no milage restrictions, valued at £1000 for my 320i Auto. Another quote turned out I wouldn't have to pay a penny more to switch to my 325i Manual... Through rossbouroughs in Jersey (so a broker, in Jersey) with AXA. Might have gotten it cheaper directly too! Oh ye, 21, was 3y ncb.
But after a run in with a granny in august last year (her fault really
) in my lovely new E34 535i my insurance rocketed to £800ish py for my 320i, which I went back to. Granted, about £100 of that is from lots of little admin things and £20 here and there added on in the monthly payments. So I should see a decent drop this july

Yeah you're definitely right about the NCB, I checked a hypothetical 1 year and 4 year and got figures of £600 and £400 respectively. That was only through one insurer also. Location's fine though (Altrincham, Cheshire)

Not always true...I was insured with Elephant (on the E36) for the last couple of years...Nay wrote:@Parabola.

They sent me a renewal and, as always, I checked on GoCompare or similar if the price was realistic and Elephant came up with a (slightly) cheaper price so I called them...
They couldn't beat the on-screen price, but they insured me with Admiral (part of the same group) on slightly better terms and the on-screen price...
FWIW I pay £280 fully comp for the 328....50y/o with my 32y/o partner as a named driver (she has her own car too) and 9yr protected no claims with £100 excess, legal cover, windscreen cover but no courtesy car cover (I don't really need that)...
1987 Henna Rot M3 (was 195bhp CAT..now more and no cat)

Dont even humour them by opening that sight. Of course elephant would be cheaper than GoCompare, considering elephant is an online insurance company, and GoCompare puts generic quotes through to 3rd party insurers and the quote also contains a cut, for GoCompare. They sent me a renewal and, as always, I checked on GoCompare or similar if the price was realistic and Elephant came up with a (slightly) cheaper price so I called them...
I used it a while back to see what insuraning an E36 M3 would be like. 21, 3ynbc, Jersey (decent insurance zone) etc... £2500-£6000 py, if I wasn't going to pay monthly. £1100 from Aviva, through a local brokers (so the brokers are getting money too). Calling up UK based insurers directly though gave me quotes of between £1x00-£2000. Every one of them nearly £1000 cheaper than gocompare....

How good would that be! Walk into the insurers, and then they go "Right all set, and your insured! Oh, and heres you £20 sir, before you leave."Parabola wrote:If only I can get nearly a grand cheaper than £980
