wow... m20b20 1989 only new parts are to try n fix it but didnt, sparks, leads, dizzy, rotor, oil + filter, coolant flush and intake and fuel system clean out with STP + RedEx... very well services, 104k

the only thing it could be... mods wise, it has a big exhaust which i havent had time to remove. but i dont think its all the way back, i think its only back box, but maybe middle section max.

nothing else mod wise could cause any trouble, coilovers, brakes, strut brace, interior etc...

it has NOT got a chavvy inductionkit, standard box and filter...

One thing it won't be is the MAF sensor, since your car doesn't have one!
Has all the symptoms of an air leak into the inlet manifold, downwind of the air flow meter.
Check all relevant hoses, and that the rubber blanking cap is still present on the little stub pipe under the throttle body, almost touching the TPS.

whats the difference in MAF and Air Flow... Mass Air Flow & Air Flow... just the mass? anyway... couldnt find and blacnking cap or a hole for a blanking capor a little stub pipe, every pipe leads somewhere relevant. i dont think there is an air leak, i think i have found and resolved all air leaks

E30 AFM is a Vane type described here in wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_flow_sensor
Most people mean the hot wire type when they talk about MAF.

I'm no expert here but I have a similar problem. I'm going to test my AFM this weekend as I'm hoping that's where the problem lies. But as you say you've discounted that, have you checked the throttle butterfly? And cleaned out the throttle body? Also, my TPS wasn't working until I tried the fix from Brianmoore. Does yours click at idle? When did the problem start?

Is it the engine kangarooing or is it driveline shunt? I.E. Do the revs go up and down or does the car just jerk?

I cured this by just cleaning the earths on the drivers side front strut pillar-true!
got to be worth a try 5 minutes work, no cost.
Luxorbeige and proud of it!
