to the shops, Alpina good job really as you can't get jack all in an M3 boot they are useless.

round the ring, M3...

You'll fit even less in teh boot of a 911 on a trip to the shops as somebody was being silly 60 years ago and put an engine right at the back and they still haven't managed to shift it forward yet :P

An E46 M3 CS would be nice Bob...

plus if you get a puncture in a 996 with wide rear wheels and put on the space saver, the rear wheel won't fit on the boot apparently...major oops time if your passenger needs to sit with a deflated wet 275 Michelin on their lap :o:

Haha, yeah... At least the M3 changed its look and engines a good deal over the years albeit went through a bad phase in the mid 90s.

I know Porsche's 911 is a case if it its not broken don't fix it, but feck it you gotta change them at least some bit over the years rather than just making a beetle look alittle wider and lower over the years :P

OT, but did you get a chance to send up those ITBs to Chris?

Si, drive one and see but it really is a sunday car and not as useable as the alpina
I'd agree with all of that....even more so if you try and release some of that power the engine can produce and sort the handling.

They are the worst car in the world for a nice comfy drive but as Bob said if you want to thrash it to within an inch of its life across the pennines then I cant think of a better car to do it in.....almost 8k out of a little 4 pot with a supersprint.

AAAActually the 911 has changed a lot over the years and each model has had a newly designed lump and improved suspension. I think you would be genuinely shocked at how they handle with all that weight over the back they are seriously fast cars.

Have to admit I've never been a big fan of the E30 M3. I just find the bodykit a bit Fast and Furious. What about a nice M6? Far classier.

I've had many great cars in the past. VR6s, 944 Turbo, Mini Copper Ss (old and new), a few fast Japs but none of them had the sense of occasion, fun and excitement of driving an E30 M3. I used to watch them racing and always wanted one. Often when you build something up so much you are often disapointed but buying my M3 was one of the best decisions I have ever made. You will not regret getting one.

They are a great drive and awesome to look at but a good one is dollars and then once you've got it you can't really use it.

So there surely is your answer.

I use mine every single day from March until the end of October ish. I just don't use it when there is really crappy or icy weather that's all. Just want to keep it well looked after that's all.

the bumpers and skirts bolt on like a normal e30 and the shoe rack actually does something in 3 figures.. which is heady hights for a girls car like a cabby ;)

Says the person with a cab..

Yes BMW went through all that effort to so drastically change the body shape to impress all the chavs down McD's.. Nothing to do with motorsport homologation at all.

You can't compare the M3 and the M6, 2 completely different cars!

Nah has to be S14, yes the alpina is epic and is probably the best alround factory E30 you could buy new. But we can't keep it forever, theres alot of other metal on the list to sample! Zm3 coupe, e46 M3, e46 B3 pina, e34 M5 lots of epic chariots to find and own. If we won the lottery we would keep everything. We bought the touring on whim, resurrected it from resting in squalor at a second hand car dealers yard as a unwanted part ex into a good car again. It would be selfish not to let another herbert enjoy it.

Its an itch that needs to be itched. Nice to talk about it though? We can't afford an M3! We'd need to add a few ££££ to pot plus sell the touring to even get close to buying a good M3 now. Whats all the fuss about on M3's?! need to see for myself

Different drive to your pina entirely. Lad who I went over to germany with in july didn't rate the M3's at all until he had been out in one round there :)

do some research on the e30 m3 fella, then you may understand what its about and why it looks the way it does. do you think the Audi Quatro & lancia delta integrale are but F&F too ?

as for M6, i think you actually mean m635csi........

the OP mr simon 13 does want a classy car, but he wants a car that performs and i think the e24 is not at all suited to the spirited driving he will be doing with this car. dont get me wrong the e24 can be made to handle but the options are less and the costs are higher.

si, e30 M3's prices are only going one way so its a matter of buying a good one and playing with it a bit. e34 M3's are at a low so it may be better going for one of them as the initial investment figue will be a lot less, invest some money get your enjoyment from it and in couple of years you'll be able to get your money back and maybe turn out a profit.

final option, build something focused to what you want, maybe a clean light weight e30 packing m52 power, maybe make it a bit track orientaited

and odd ball choince , e36 m3..................again prices at an all time low, but are a great car to drive and infinate options to "tune" them if you want. give it few years and prices for these cars will be going back up. currently a lot of them are in the hands of a generation of lads who can not afford to maintain them, so not may good ones will be left.

you think?

m30's affect the handling and ballance a fair bit regardless of what people say.

drive both back to back on the some road , push it a bit and you'll soon see

then there's the prices and availablity to consider.

some people make m3s sound more like torture devices than useable cars :D

i find mine no bother around town, no bother to use every day, is far more predictable and communicative than most things on the road in snow and ice, is reasonable on fuel when not giving it death and is perfectly happy to sit at 90 on the motorway all day.

infact, on sunday i spent around 6 hours on the road, mostly at high speed, with two kids on board, neither at any time mentioned being uncomfortable, having a bad back, headaches or going deaf, things most people suggest you'll get within 5 minutes of being in one anywhere other than a racetrack  (my car even has such horrible things as an aftermarket exhaust and uprated suspension)

the engine is highly strung only in so much as it will keep going long after an m20 has run out of puff, but they're still not exactly gutless, there are people here who have compared standard m3 and 325i side by side and report that at any speed in any gear the m3 will pull away, despite the extra capacity and cylinders of the 325.

so, an m3 might not be as 'rare' as your touring, but then what does rare really count for other than bragging rights? does it actually matter? surely the fact that bmw managed to sell so many m3s at such a price premium over other e30s suggests that it must have been worth it. even so theyre hardly a common sight on the road. i don't think i've seen another e30 m3 on the road whilst driving mine in the past 2 years, and it's not like the last time i did see one i was annoyed at how common they are and wished i was in something a bit more 'rare'

buy one, try it for a bit, use it as it was meant to be used, if you don't like it sell it on and try something else, prices are unlikely to nosedive any time soon.
cheers,

harry

Haha, I'm only winding you up Bob. I know they've changed dramatically over the years.

I've driven an old one with silly power and it is probably the one car that properly scared the shit out of me at even lowish speeds albeit one of the first cars I drove.

Been a passenger in a modded turbo targa too a few years ago and that was fun winding along a road on the side of a river...

But I still think I prefer an E30 M3 and a E46 M3... maybe its just me being stubborn again

Barry; I mean a bad phase in the mid 90's in terms of the E36 M3. A great car really but when compared to the E30 and the E46 its abit poor plus the early ones have a habbit of falling apart on the inside :P

All i worry about is when the touring is sold thats it, you won't pick up another one. Rare is kudos, theres more M3's but they're not exactly common either!

Very true.
I think the amount of effort/time put into your touring would have a big affect on any decision tbh.Would do with me anyway. :)
