i hope your not saying your changing sides to become a drifterBrianmoooore wrote:Can't even get out of my yard with a 'normal' E30 in the snow. Not much of a problem here, since snow is a bit of a rarity. Not at all rare at the moment, though!
I have a rust expired 325SE with a good LSD on it sitting here, waiting to be recycled, so I stuck a battery in it this afternoon and fired it up. First time I've been able to drive a slipper in snow!
Car's insured on my trader policy, but is a bit light on MOTs and tax, so, of course, I've only been able to drive it on 'private' roads (officer), but there's no comparison in traction. In and out of the yard with no problems, and good fun in the lanes on virgin snow - just one long drift, if you want it!

I bet the driver of the panda had a very smug grin on his faceMayze wrote:I was overtaken by an E reg panda 4x4 tonight whilst crawling up a very icy hill.
That was the first and hopefully the last time that happens.

On a serious note does a slipper really make that much difference in the snow? that may sound a stupid question I know but I haven't driven in snow much (2nd or 3rd time) Does it stop/reduce the amount the backend wants to swing to the left that much?

My car got stuck because the left wheel was on snow and right wheel on dry ground. All the power was spinning the left wheel only.charlE30 wrote:I bet the driver of the panda had a very smug grin on his faceMayze wrote:I was overtaken by an E reg panda 4x4 tonight whilst crawling up a very icy hill.

That's what the slipper diff. cures - you get the traction of the best gripping wheel plus that of the least gripping wheel, instead of just that of the least gripping one. A minimum of twice the traction.Blitz wrote:My car got stuck because the left wheel was on snow and right wheel on dry ground. Doesn't stop the back end swinging about - anything but - but it happens in a much more controllable way.
first thing this morning popped my head out of the door, this was the neighbours car, so i thought shit, dug the moordoor out of the snow and set of on my 15 mile journey to work, got sent home at 3 due to the blizzard in Liverpool. She struggled a bit but she got me home.

I took mine through to work a few times earlier on in the year - I was getting too used to the TC and ABS on my E39, needed more of a challenge
It's not coming out to play at the mo though - too much digging required ;)

And we've had a further 6 inches since I took this shot

sadly this is all we've had from the latest load

although at one point i did think i was going to rip the splitter off when i hit a mound of slush and ice that had built up between wheel tracks of other cars

A tip for anyone with an open diff if you can't pull away by only using the clutch and no throttle and you have one wheel spinning up try putting the hand brake on a few clicks makes a temporary and very low tech slip diff.
Just don't forget to take it off as soon as you get going you can do this with a bit of left foot breaking if you are in a wrong wheel drive car.

Ohhhhh, i'm getting jelous of all the deep snow pics, only got a couple of inches here.
Love driving E30s in the snow, just have to hope the roads are all clear of the useless panicing idiots that drive on them.

Snowy hospital car park. Doctor's parking permit. It would be rude not to.
Couple of hairy moments, but great great fun. One thing that sticks in the mind, just don't touch the brakes - ABS is a twat in the snow!
The scariest bit was walking back after parking the car, almost slipped over landing on my face - v dangerous!
