The pin numbers are marked on the socket if you look carefully. The reset pin is number 7 in both types of socket, and the other pin is just an earth.
7 is easy to find on the later socket - it's the one straight in front of 'pacman's' mouth.
I usually use an earth somewhere else (rear bonnet catch bracket is my favourite), because it halves the number of pins in the socket I have to identify, and my test lead I use for the purpose has a croc clip on one end.

Can anyone suggest how to test if the boot lights are staying on with the boot shut?

do it with a paperclip be happy you used an item that costs less than a penny over a tool that cost $100+ or even worse paying a some tire changer an hour clock time at the stealership!
just bend the paperclip and stick the ends in the two hole #7 to reset and #19 the ground and turn the key to the second position...leave the paperclip in for i think 5 seconds and the oil is reset and 10 seconds will reset the service light
have fun and i'll come get my pint in september!

I do not trust myself with bits of wire,I bought the proper tool about 4 years back for less than £15!

And can only be used for one thing! My piece of wire with a croc clip on each end has dozens of uses.penton08 wrote:the proper tool is now less than a tenner from gsf.
