Am I the only person who thinks you're going to have to be bloody lucky to stumble across a minty 325i these days?

E30s have been not much more than 'affordable transport' for many, MANY years and are only just about know starting to grow into a bit of a classic.

Alex it seems like you are discounting 325i's for what I'd consider to be minor things on a 20 year old car. Arches that may need a bit of TLC in the future? I don't know of many 20+ year old cars that don't. Like wise, no major scratches? It's a BMW, I'm sure cars that haven't had some jealous bastard attack the paintwork are in a minority.

If you're THAT caught up on bodywork then a new lump really is the only way to go. The odds that you're going to find someone to part £2,000+ for your I.S, and then will find a 325i in equally good condition without paying through the nose within a short period of time are slim.

If I was to stray away from E30's, I've allways wanted a E34 525i sport. 80's BMW looks with modern BMW refinement.

This was my dads one. A/C and heated seats. LSD standard too. And you can get mint ones for 325i sport needing major work money. Also best BMW seats I've sat in.

Alex
finding a clean rust free 325i or 320 is very very hard, nearly all of them have been hit by rust ,or an owner/drift dick who has abused it :(

you have the prefect base car in your possesion and better the devil you know !
a 318IS has all the goodies, suspension brakes ect but shite running gear

keep it, and stick a low comp early b2.5 in there with a 391 slipper and it will make a great e30,
if you source the lump and drop it off here, i will fit it :)

you know what i have been in the same position twice! had 2 really nice i.s's and regret selling them hence why i got a 2nd! ok 325i sport (reason i sold the 1st one) are quicker but imo the i.s was so much more fun than the sport for cornering and where it counts 0-50 the i.s is not that far away. i had to sell my sport due to 2k insurance and £60 a week juice bills and got another i.s that was the biggist regret of my life when i sold that although it was for a ring for the mrs! anyway i have an e34 now as i needed a bigger car. but the i.s has the full package:

cheap and good to run

nippy where it counts

handling is better than a sport

just great fun cars

sell it and read this post and you WILL have the same regrets as me!

imo the i.s is the best allrounder E30 you can buy you have got a very nice one, dont be a fool and keep it that way eh!

I say get yourself a normal car (if you will) and garage the e30. you'll start to want to take the e30 out from time to time, then it'll all come back.

i do prefer the 6pot power delivery but i still think having owned both the i.s is more fun to drive better on juice and can out handle a lot of stuff you would not expect it to! am not dissing 6 pots there mint but an i.s is a great allrounder and the 6pots do not handle as well even if they are undoubtly in 325i form quicker on a strait. i think a 325i and an i.s both i mint std condition there would not be much in it round the ring bends straits is where the i.s would loose.

i'd be tempted to throw it in a garage for some TLC and tinkering, and run a truly hateful car over the winter.

I've had rover 214/414's, a mk3 astra diesel van, a mk3 1.8 chavalier and various other cars as temporary hacks when i've needed to do some work to my E30. it's generally my only car and that's the easiest way to get about, buy a £100 scrapyard dodger. Then in the spring when you get your E30 out of the garage, sporting all new bushes and a few choice upgrades, you'll truly appreciate why you simply can't sell it! :D

I'd be tempted to get some M3 TB's on there (i've heard that E36 ones can be used, just keep two as spares :D )and some lary cams and uprated management. Then you will really have the baby M3 which will be an utter delight to drive.

until you can comfortably afford the insurance (like my £400 policy winkeye ) concentrate on keeping the 4 pot and make it sing, then relish in the handling you can achieve.

Unlucky. 6 pots is where the heart is.. iS' just done cut any mustard nevermind the mustard! yeah an iS handles.. but an m20 powered car does it better, and an alloy block 24v just floats the front nicely :)
