Moderator: martauto
seem like a better idea to pay a specialist to do it now? Not a pleasent job either i dont think.

a garage with the tool - yes. Cost me £100 for a local bmw specialist to do it for me (only specialist for about 40+ miles - i think he knows this too so charges a lil extra) IIRC i remember reading posts on here of people taking around 8 hours to do the job themselves without the tool

If you're really intent on doing it yourself you could alway drop the rear beam off. It's not too bad a job really if you're prepared to get your hands dirty!
The bushes are relativly easy to get out when the beam is off the car

Now driving an E46 320D touring
it isnt that hard to do yourself, i did the ones on the back of the compact and replaced them with hard black polly bushes.
Deffo take off the rear beam, it isnt that big of a job, then put the beam in a vice. Heat up the aluminum insert inthe middle of the bush with a blow tourch, get it as hot as you can from both ends. Then i had a big adjustible spanner, the ally insert has flats on the sides, so i tried to turn the ally bush until the glue snapped and knocked it out.
Then i nicked the side of the outer bush with a hacksaw, making sure i didnt damage the beem. One side i used a hammer and chisel to rip the bush out, and the other i used an air chissel, much easier!
You could alsoways get a second hand beam if you are worried about doing it in a space o time... It took me about 4 hours to do in all, thats taking the beam onand off aswell!

I pulled the entire rear suspension off the project cabbie to deal with all the bushes;

Bushes are still in the rear beam there,I am dealing with the easier trailing arm one's first!Same method was used, burn the rubber until the centre bit will drop/bash out, then you need to support the beam whilst you cut the outer steel liner out.

You can just see the remains of the beam bushes at the top of this piccie..
Local garage charged £10 to press the new bushes in for me.
This is not quite a straightforward DiY job,OK if you are working on a project like I am,but on my to running cars I paid my local BMW indipendant specialist £115 per car.

heres my bush removal info
The tool kit with instructions on how to make the tool to what u need to do

You put the kit together to make up the puller and installer
Bush puller made up

The bush puller in use

On this pic it shows how the puller has a metal lid that locks around the top of the bush that pulls it out

On this pic u can see how the device also uses the sill of the car for the removal tool

The bush installer made up

The bush tool installing

If u look the lid of the tool overlaps onto the rear beam for better pulling

Once pushed all the way in it looked like this

All in all a cracking tool, but to be honest all though I was using the tool it was a still a bitch of a job as the metal collar on the old bush on the left had corroded to the car and took a lot of swearing and smashing to get the beam to drop down however with out the tool there is no way I could of done it

Pretty pricey alright especially as you still need to do the worst part of the job in getting the beam detached from the car to be able to use them.
It's easy enough once you get the beam away from the car to change them as all you need is a little air-chizel and jigsaw to cut the bush out
My preferred option of doing them is pick up a second hand beam and trailing arms. Refurb the whole lot or at least a lick of paint with new pads, shoes, discs and lines etc and put the whole lot on to have the whole rear end finished of problems as lets face it, brake lines on our cars as well as all the bushes start to go at the same time and a nice shiny black rear subframe and trailing arms look great!
