Rusted jacking point - is this area doube skinned?

I started poking away at the (fake?) jacking point in the corner where the pedals are.

Found mostly rubbery painted stuff with rust sandwiched in the between and a big dirty patch of rust underneat and around it.

While poking away I noticed what looked like maybe 2 layers of metal?

Before I start cutting and welding in new metal can someone tell me if it's just 1 layer of metal or 2 layers?

pull the carpet back and have a look. there is only one skin behind the "thing" but there is a seam that joins the floorpan to the bulkhead, thats where it rusts and thats probably what you have found.

Yeah pulling the carpet was next up when I get at it later, seems like an awful pain to remove

Cut it all back, replace the floor section with a decent thickness of new metal and don't worry about replication of the square section, its a factory cradle point not a jacking point in any case, leaving that section out can only dissuade tyre fitters from using it again !

Remove the wing, carpet and accel pedal (it will break , so get a new one p/no: 35 41 1 156 488 ) , the loom will unclip and pull out of the way easily enough

Ant how do you mean the accelerator pedal will break?

Where abouts is the loom? I've the panel under the steering column of as well as the the light adjuster. Didn't notice any other wires.

I'm assuming this is do-able without removing the centre console to get the carpet enough out of the way for cutting, welding and painting etc?

I'm doing a bit of crash repair to the driver side. Wing and wheel was of when decided to poke around.

Would the car being a touring make a difference to it being double skinned?

I think my brother is using .8mm for his mini, will be using that (and him to weld )

I'll try and take pics when I tackle this, have a front panel that needs clear coat, and a bonnet, wing, bumper and valance to prep for paint

what Ant means is there is only a thin bit of plastic as the pivot point where the accelerator pivots at the floor
where the pedal is mounted on the floor will be full of crap so when you pull on it 9 out of 10 time it just snaps

you can try using a big flat srewdriver and prize it from the bottom but best to do as Ant says and order a new one

One (bent) E34 bonnet has supplied me with enough steel to repair all the holes in at least half a dozen E30's, and there's still plenty left!
FWIW, I've only ever broken one accelerator pedal amongst the several I've removed, although it is officially a one use item!
Steel is only single skin, but, as said above, there are overlaps where panels join.

I noticed on overlap just above where the rust starts. The rust is really only around and under the jacking point and some of the seam has seen better days.

With the lovely sunny weather here in Ireland and a few other things to do furst not much is getting done about it just yet.

Does that round thing have a purpose or can i cut the lot out and weld in a plate? (If it's bad and needs cutting that is)

yeah that looks a bit tricky. see my last post on my thread as ive just cut out mine. I suspect maybe a bigger hole for yours though?

my 4dr was worse than that - so much so i could get my size 12 foot through the passenger footwell

All that sealant stuff catches fire when you weld down there so take care dude! 2 person job makes it easier to stop it catching fire.

And I was being more worried about the carpet catching fire I'll have a bucket of water on stand-by

Got most of the other things done and started cutting away at the above mentioned rust. Hole kept getting bigger and bigger...





I think I'll start cutting away a bit of the side also. Where the underside and side are welded together is a bit rotten in between the 2 layers of metal.

Also what you think of this, is it of concern or just put the se skirts back on over it and for get about it for the moment?

ive just had to have exactly the same welding done on mine but on the nearside, defo a two man job to stop flamage!!!!! i was getting very worried at several points during the welding but all is well.. cost me £75. needed a small plate welding into the sill on nsr close to the back end also

Would I be better of removing the near side pad? It's not half as bad as the other one, there's still metal.




Was thinking of cutting the metal with the hole in it of and drilling out the spot welds that hold the pad there. Only I can't really see the spot welds Anyone know where abouts they would be found?

Should I leave it on? Recon it might cause problems again down the line, I can still avoid all the hasle before it's to late.

i would take that off while you are at it, theres three or four spots on the underside, dunno about the front bit as mine just fell off after i removed the three underneath.

Got the big hole patched up this evening and spent an hr nearly trying to get the other one of. Few little holes in the metal and surface rust. Treated it and put a plate over it and welded it up. My god does that sound deadening stink when it's getting very hot, smelled very toxic. The other side had a few fires when welding in the plate Just seam sealer and stone chip for it to do tomorrow.
