Correct. I was coming onto the a24 roundabout at Dorking from Reigate. Coming in from the south on the A24 was a left hooker white e30 in Full Mobil 1 livery sporting the 1000 000 miles logo on US plates. I could not believe it. It was mint to look at and I wish I'd chased it and got a photo of it!!!

So it didn't actually do 1,000,000mls on the road then.

Still impressive though.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

the normal driving conditions include more cold starts, rev play, more ''sporty'' drive etc but these results are still very impressive...looks like Mobil is a good oil

I'm not so convinced. They've maximised the servicing and it really was the optimum operating conditions. I'm sure that most of the premium oils (Castrol, Duckhams, etc.) would have had a similar effect. Once an engine is at it's optimum operating temp. wear is actually very minimal at a constant speed. It's when you start them up and jump straight on the motorway or into stop start traffic the wear arises.

I remember the Mobil 1 ad campaign very well - they milked it for some time afterwards - but still 1 million miles and then the engine still being within all manufacturers tolerances for "as new" is still a hell of an achievement

still.......shame mobil 1 is like water.......most cars I had around this time worked best on 20/50 .....which is more like glue....:o:

Mobil 1 has tiny nano robots in the oil that actually service & repair your car as your driving it

It's more of an advert for BMW build quality and regular servicing than for any particular oil!

The advert shows the quality of the M20 engine more than anything else. I'd expect similar results with any 'quality' oil.
I did a similar stripdown on a 200,000 mile 'real life' M20 engine a few years ago, and found nearly everything to be within new tolerance.

Did they do some thing like this with a merc 190? Seam to remeber they did a test on a banked oval circuit and ran it at top speed to show how good there engines were???

The cadillac North star engine of about 10 years ago (it had DOHC and V8, so the DOHC thing was practically spage age for them) anyhow they drained most of the fluids from the engine and left half the recommended oil and ran it accross the US and it made it. it apparrently can switch off half the engine to allow it to cool then swap over when the other half of the V gets hot.

But it all means nothing as the engines sold to customers were rubbish and had nothing but complaints.... about using oil winkeye

the point here is real road conditions cannot be simulated in a lab, a million miles could be possible with a knackered 850 mini engine in these cases

Just got this months BMW Car and the Mobil 325i is featured in the next issue so that probably explains its recent appearance.

Just looked at the link, apart from when it was serviced it was running at a constant, warmed up temperature. No cold starts, just on the go all the time. It's not exactly daily driving. Still good though :D
