The guy in the motorfactors is partly correct. The auto doesn't have a clutch in that respect, it has the torque converter. So he is correct. However, there are internal clutches within the gearbox itself, which are not normally considered user-serviceable. Well i disagree with the motorfactor guy.
All auto's have clutches, many clutches, as i told before on mine atleast i have "A" clutch that makes it go forward, then "B" clutch that makes revers and high gear, then "C" clutch that i think is 1,2,3 then "D" clutch that is revers and low gear, then i have "E" "F" "G" aswell don't know what they do atm ;) I changed all of them.
A clutch in an auto has several disks, these can get worn, this will make the auto slip.
Best thing todo is to buy a overhaul kit for the auto, or find another, but finding another isn't always easy, the new could be damaged aswell.

All auto repair guys says that the hardest part is to get the damn auto down from the car, i think this is correct, if you take it down and dissamble it you should be able too see what's the problem, take your time and be clean, soak everything in fresh atf oil before assembly it again.

I have a 325i autobox here that's done 59k it worked perfect before the manual conversion

ProToZyKo, why does the gearbox have to have the same numbers for it to work? is it just different ratios? or will another box, say from a 325, physically not fit?
Would it be ok as a short term method so i can save the money to get my box rebuilt?

First the converter could be another size to fit the flywheel, but you can use your old one so that's not really a problem, then there could be a problem with electronic since some autos have some and some have none.
Other than this there could be a problem with the pipes, but i think all bmw auto's uses the same.
I don't know much more about this atm, but a gearbox from a 323 could be the same as the one on a 325, just best to check the numbers then you will now for shure.

walshc take a good look at the new one to figure out what differences there could be, if your lucky it's only that the 325 has higher ratio, not really a problem but you will use more gasoline ;)
And especially check the middle axle mounting, it's a pain to change that when the gearbox is mounted.

Bugger! I got the same problem! Feels like a clutch is slipping and revs up if given a push
