Just for interest, I'm insured with direct line and declaring the 35mm drop on my touring took the quote from £175 to £290 (fully comp, legal, guaranteed hire car). More than I thought.
The best I could find on confused.com was £300 exactly but that didn't include legal cover (£20) or a hire car.
5 years no claims and 10% discount for a second vehicle included in the Direct Line quote...

Does anyone actually know where insurance companies get their numbers from? There just doesn't appear to be any logic behind the costs!

Now driving an E46 320D touring
It's all to do with which bit of the market they want on any given day - Direct Line never seem to be cheap for me, so I guess there's something about my risk profile that they don't generally target. I always check them though - it's always best to get as many prices as possible.

There's no logic to anything where insurers/insurance is concerned.Daf318is wrote:Does anyone actually know where insurance companies get their numbers from? There just doesn't appear to be any logic behind the costs!
Saga won't accept LPG!
Liverpool Victoria wanted more for my 1.3 Fiesta then they do for my 2.7 LPG'd 320i Touring.
Both these together (Saga on the Fiesta and LV on the Touring) costs me less than £400/year. Admiral wanted over £1000 for the 2 cars on MultiCar.
Insurance is legalised robbery.
i was paying £1020 for my 318is fully comp last year with norwich union direct,
then bought my white 325 sport and got both, that and my 318is insured for £1070 fully comp with directline!
now just got that 2.0 cab and insured it for £70 a year more than my 318is, but then want an alarm onit!

I was getting insurance quotes a couple of years ago and it would cost me £400 a year for a 1 litre F reg micra.... and with the same company on the same date I insured my MR2 turbo for £600!

Now driving an E46 320D touring
First year i unsured my Celica gt-four turbo it was £185 TP,F&T. They want £374 this year!

I wouldn't mind if I'd turbo'd it or something but I've only made it handle better! Anyway, directline were still cheapest of the bunch so I've gone with them.

they told me once that although better brakes are a safety improvement they consider that ill take more off a risk because ill be puting to much faith in the new brakes and are therefore more of a risk. you cant second guess insurance companies.
It's almost never worth staying with an insurance company for a second year - they don't reward your loyalty, so much as profit from your apathy - even if your renewal notice indicates a saving on the previous year, the likelihood is that you can get cheaper elsewhere as they generally target 'new' business ahead of all other concerns. This may not be the case with classic policies, but for general use policies it's almost always the case - Morat's situation is pretty rare I reckon.JJ26 wrote:First year i unsured my Celica gt-four turbo it was £185 TP,F&T. Even the same with classic policies djk. I was used to it for normal policies where they try and stitch you up for your loyalty. Problem with the modified classic policy was that I couldn't get it cheaper ANYWHERE else. Still I was not happy, and waited for the last day and HIC rang me. I chatted the women up for about half an hour, added some extra modifications including a roll cage and saved a 1/5th of the price (£100).

I always contact my existing insurers anonymously as a new customer before renewing. They've always matched the new quote (eventually) when confronted.

In the past I've had to take out a new policy with the same insurer rather than renewing, as they wouldn't match the price!Brianmoooore wrote:I always contact my existing insurers anonymously as a new customer before renewing. They've always matched the new quote (eventually) when confronted.

That's a really good idea actually - I might try that next time 'roundBrianmoooore wrote:I always contact my existing insurers anonymously as a new customer before renewing. They've always matched the new quote (eventually) when confronted.

That's why I included 'eventually'. You have to work at it, and threaten to walk.Ziggy wrote:In the past I've had to take out a new policy with the same insurer rather than renewing, as they wouldn't match the price!Brianmoooore wrote:I always contact my existing insurers anonymously as a new customer before renewing. That's pretty much what I've done for the last 10 years or so - until this year.Brianmoooore wrote:I always contact my existing insurers anonymously as a new customer before renewing.
I'd been getting quotes and no-one I contacted came within 120% of my last year's price. Then I got a renewal reminder in from my existing insurer and it was less than £5 more than last year.
What a refreshing change!

No, and I should have done but I got back from 10 days holiday to find the "Your policy expires in a week if you don't tell us to renew" letter sitting on the mat - and the tax had expired too so I needed insurance fast. I'll definitely try them next year (if I remember!).robbo86 wrote:Didn't try flux or Performance direct. One of the modified insurers.

My insurance has always been realy cheap with Flux and HIC, the tourer is £150 and the last 911 was £230 and a 944tbo £200.
and my mx5 is an import so i have to pay a massive £190.
Whenever ive added mods its only gone up £40 at most if at all.
(all classic policys)
One day I asked why its always so cheap, as i rarely see a policy through before changing and dont have much ncb.
They replied performance cars are judged on your previous expierience with high powerd cars..as i has had high risk cars from day 1, its cheaper for me as its on file.
So if you have only had a 1.3 untill your 30 then you will pay through the nose even if you have 10yrs ncb
I have never haggled or shopped round.
They have only ever been silly once, on a skyline GTR- they couldn't cover it at all?, i had to get it put on my mates trade policy.

2 weeks ago I got clocked doing 96mph on my local A road by an unmarked car
My renewal notice has just arrived quoting me £301 with a £250 excess for the year. I rang them up to tell them the good news about my points and fine. The lad said he would have to enter my details again. so fearing the worst i re-gave my details only to almost fall of my chair when he told me the new quote... it was £20 cheaper with a £100 excess ????
Wish i asked him what the quote was if i had 6 points added on my license

I posted this on an earlier post, sums up insurance companies for me:
When I was 24 I tried Tesco for a 1.8td escort (yes I hang my head in shame) and they refused to qoute me, no bans or points, nothing, they just refused. My mate, 19yrs old, one right off and 6points under his belt, got insured off them on a Subaru Impreza.
I then took the registration of a DB9 on TopGear and tried for a quote on that online.
I had to lower its value to £89k as that was the max they would insure for, and they insured me fully comp for £3k! That included parking it on the roadside overnight!
So who can get insured on what is anyones guess really, I think its pot luck.

I couldent beleve it myself. I asked him to repeat it twice in case i wasent hearing right. Mind you i aint complaing
My insurance is business class on my 325i sport £250 they wanted £300 fully comp and £500 TPFT so this means they simply pay out far less to policies that are business class for people my age (29) living in my area.
It's all based on previous claims data so if people with a 3 point sp30 cost the insurance company less in payouts then the policy will be cheaper.

If I can't fix it I'll f**k it up so bad nobody can!!
