Its a geuine BMW alarm that was an option on late E30's.
My H reg 320i touring had one.
The same alarm fob was used on early E36 alarms so prob why the clueless parts person said what he said.

On cabs there is a slot for the old style alarm by the rear number plate. Iain actually pointed it out to me on my old cab.armanib wrote:Someone said there may be a way of unlocking boot from be behind the number plate but they joke alot so is this true
Also why you always see a 2nd lock on the door of a car.
Surley the alarm will deactivate even if you use the key?

If the alarm is not working then I would not worry about it being dorment on the car.
I and most of the people on here would say get someoen to install a new system intot he car and let them worry about your old alarm. An approved installation will help keep your premium down on the car ( that's if you got it insured yet ) .
Both my old cab and my Alpina have retrofitted systems in them. I am planning on getting the Alpina's system upgraded this year so I can have remote locking again.

No idea on the wiering plan for an IS. I belieave early BMW alarms are not the most reliable hence many e30's have new ones installed.
Thinking about things why would any alarm cabels go to the cluster sockets?

i have a rectangular alarm fob on mine (89/90 325i touring) which does total closure-ish (front windows only, leaved the electric rears and sunroof open!). if you still have the small key, you can switch the alarm off via the key switch on the alarm sounder/control box itself.
incidentally, i went to BMW a while back, showed the chappie the alarm fob and he had one in stock. about £5 iirc
your parts man must be a plank!
