point taken , but just to clarify - i personally prefer to see pics but if there not there, its not a problem, i just wont buy. the only person who should be harmed from the lack of a picture is the seller as they are minimising their sale potential. i dont think this is a good enough reason to ban the ads or introduce a membership system or other means of 'exclusivity'.
Also, i look at this site almost on a daily basis but i wont post just for the sake of posting, if i feel i've got something valid to say or some advice to give then i will, otherwise i just enjoy browsing the various forums etc.

It's not the newbies selling that pisses me off, though I do like the forum.bmw5 approach that only gold members who contribute £20 pa, I think can sell, it's the "unauthorised traders" who piss me off.

There are loads of people selling way more stuff than a lot of the paid up traders, ignoring the unpaid time and effort that goes into making this site what it is. If you are making a profit out of being on here, you should be contributing. It's only a fiver a week and if you think that's too much, I'm sure that if you speak to the admin team, they'll tailor a deal to suit your needs.

So come on guys, you know who you are, contribute and assist in the smooth running of what is undoubtedly THE best E30 resource on t'internet.

Thw Forum.bmw5 approach, though, possibly deprived someone on there the opportunity to buy my old E34 iX very cheaply...

I was asking for advice on it, someone responded saying they may be interested in taking it on, I said make me an offer and I was banned for advertising!!
The mods were being draconian and, tbh, perfect dickheads about it...

I'm happy to pay to advertise, tbh, if that is what I want to do AND I think I am going to make enough from the sale to cover the ad costs...
Howver, the end result would be that the parts would be a little more expensive and I suspect the folk who only have a few odd bits wouldn't bother to sell them...

That does sound more than a little harsh. There has to be common sense and discretion.

The folk with only a few odd bits is, I suspect, exactly what the free classifieds on this site are designed for, but there are many who in my view right royally take the piss.

It seems the main problem is not n00bs selling, it's anyone who fails or refuses to read the cunningly hidden topic at the top of the for sale page called.....

Announcement: ADVERT RULES! Read BEFORE POSTING any adverts please.

The rules contained within are not complicated or unreasonable, if people stuck to them, we'd have a happy for sale section for newbs and old hands alike

Agreed. Perhaps a rule should be devised whereby if you appear to be selling for profit without contributing financially to the zone, you should have your selling privilege removed until such time as trader status is agreed. I notice at present some members have 'unauthorised trader' in their status, but they are not prevented from posting further sales threads. Thoughts?

I suppose the trouble would be first deciding on how to quantify fairly what constitutes 'too much selling' - number of items? value? - and secondly the requirement for the rule to be enforced on top of all the other sterling work the mods already do for the forum as a whole.

There will always be flaws in any system of rules, and there will always be bad eggs about trying to rip people off - the balance has to be struck between preventing bad practice and keeping the forum user-friendly and relatively open, not to mention manageable for those who volunteer their time to help us all out!

i put feelers out when about to break a fragger,
this enables me to remove the wanted parts 1st in bulk[hopefully]

i payed to sell on the zone,i don't mind the fee as it goes back in to the zone.
i'm not sure what the rules are on when you are deemed a small trader?

strange thread but a valid question.

i do, however, get really "pee'd off" with those zoners who seem to have nothing better to do than search through the for sale ads just so that they can make sarcastic, rude or other off putting comments on other peoples for sale posts (or is it an easy way to boost their post count??). totally pointless - it could cost someone a sale. let prospective buyers make their own mind up.

So come on guys if anything's gonna change , stop the saddo's trying to sabotage sales, give them a few unwanted M badges to polish, should keep em busy for a while. :D

Hi there,

I thought I’d add my comments to the discussion being a "noob"
I was surprised when i joined this forum that there is no restriction for selling. I was a member of the skyline forum and when i joined there was a rule that you had to have a 50 post count to sell and lately this has been increased to 100 due to spamming. I found this very frustrating as i was with them for a couple of years, but as i didn't post many threads i could not sell anything to other forum users. Therefore being forced to put money in the pockets of the owners of eBay, and not other Skyline owners. I could have spammed the site myself to increase my post count but this could ultimately lead to another increase and spoil the forum for other users
I would suggest that you should have a membership fee which would allow users to sell items/cars and also charge a nominal fee to sell a car on the forum for non-members. At least the forum users/members would be the ultimate beneficiaries.

I suggest not, we don't really have any problems do we? A couple of people nerked that there have been a few adverts from people who don't contribute back to the site is not reason enough to change the system.

There isnt a problem at all. Would those people be so bothered if they had pick up a set a genuine Alpina 8j rims and interior for say £50 from one of these ads ??? or some "old " 2.7 engine for the same, I think not...

We have mods , and they do a great job and lock threads that dont confirm.

At least the parts are being offered here first and surely thats a real positive thing and a compliment to the site that items are here. Yes I know that mainly its because its free to advertise but so long as genuine enthusiast get first dibs then that a good thing isnt it ?

Stay positive and keep looking out for that bargain !!!!

Have to agree - there is the possibility for things to get out of hand, but as they haven't done thus far, it's probably best to stay with the present system. The forum and the community that frequents it will continue to evolve, and where serious problems arise, perhaps there will be a need to institute changes. It's quite clear from suggestions on this thread the different measures that could be implemented should severe difficulties arise - until then, it seems to me that the consequences of introducing such measures are even less desirable than the present, albeit annoying and frustrating, facility for nefarious folk to take advantage of the forum.

i think the last few posts are valid and believe things should stay as they are for now. i was on another forum and they intoduced more rules and regs for selling. then when less people were selling items they reverted back to the old easier way.

it has been mentioned that members go on and slate sellers for posting without pics. i have found that this is the case on other threads also. people getting slated for miss-spelling or having an opinion. it is this that has kept me from posting in the years i have been on and the reason i have a relativly low post count. it shouldnt mean i am un trustworthy.

A fair number of pages which I'm not going to bother reading.

I agree with Fooy's comment about people using the zone as a free ebay and not keeping with the spirit of the zone and having the sense of comunity.

I think it is fair to say that the markets are really for people that help keep the place alive. The traders put their hands in their pockets and donate for the privilage and plenty actually come to meets or give help on the tech area.

I know I don't really know too much technical stuff to help others , but going to meets and supporting the zone is just a big part of what members are about. It's a shame people to take advantage of the zone and it's members.

Agreed, it is a shame, in fact I'm ashamed I haven't been to any meets myself :o: . The zone is pretty much awesome the way it is, and we all must be careful what we wish for!

Zone meets are a good laugh , but I love the big shows where we can all wave the e30 banner.

The 3 big ones are Gaydon , Bimmerflex and Ultimate BMW Show at Santapod.

well done mate, exactly how i was thinking, when i posted this,

but i will say one thing, i didn't say all newbies were untrustworthy,

as for changing the zone all i would say, advertise as the rules state or be banned from selling ( 3 strikes and out as it were)

oi oi oi what's all this talk about charging to sell stuff?

what good can come from it?

The ONLY reason i sell parts on here is because it's free. You start charging, i start ebaying.

this may sound rude or rather blunt but it's true.

I am a newbie myself, and the problem with fellow newbies is that can you trust 'em.
For example, i am always checking out for parts but when there are no pictures or location, it kinda throws the question across 'is it legit'?
Regarding this site, personally if i want something, i check how who is selling it, if its someone who has not so many posts, check if they have had anything decent to contribute in other categories. It kinda helps working out the sellers character.
For me, 0 posts with no decent contribution = problems.

Well thats my bronze 2 penny piece!
