Remote Engine Start Alarm

Has anyone fitted one of these alarm systems to their car before? Are they worth installing? Easy to install or best left to professionals?

I've just been given one BNIB, just wondering whether it's worth installing.

would be good in the winter ecpecially if you drive a cab

i cant imagine it being too difficult all the wires will be under the dash

i'am sure mr brianmoooore will be able to sort you out with his knowledge

seems like a cool party peice...... the problem i wouls have with this type of gadget is once you have hit the button and the car is started what if someone gets in and drives off??

Car doors would be locked so no chance of getting in without breaking in

you shouldnt start it in gear either if its a manual. my mates cousin had a manual supra turbo with one fitted and started it with the remote start - with it in gear! went straight through the garage door

I've got the standard BMW alarm fitted.

Illegal? Never heard of that, my cousin had one fitted on his E30 many years ago

it's only illegal to leave a vehicle unattended and running on a public highway , so if you leave it running on youre drive it's ok ,

back on topic they are not that hard to fit if you have any sense or wiring ability, there is so much scope for damage to be done if not properly installed. code alarm do quite a few alarms with the remote start function on. could be worth googling if you want to know more

Good gimik but a waist of time realy, you only use it on a cold morning or on a timer to start just before you leave for work but it just attracts attention to the car.
If you put it in you have to make sure the wiring is connected to the rev counter and the brake lights so as soon as the peddals are touched it cuts the engine. But when you climb in you normaly knock the pedals while your getting comfy so it cuts out anyway.

This states that no person shall cause or permit to be on any road any motor vehicle which is not attended by a person duly licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and the parking brake is effectively set. Shouldn't really be used as leaving your car idling from cold is bad for your engine. I only wait for mine to switch to gas, and then drive straight off!

i've got one, but not wired it in yet (and probably never will)

having read the instructions it's quite clever, there's no chance of leaving the car in gear. the one i have you have to put the handbrake on, press a button on the fob, remove the key (engine still running) get out, close door and set the alarm.

the remote start function won't work unless you do the above when leaving the car.

i'd only ever use it for starting the car up to defrost while i eat my breakfast on winter mornings, or 5 mins before i clock off from work on a late shift.

I had one on my 8 series!!! Very nice feature to have in the winter!!!!

Not illegal to have it - may be illegal to leave the car idling on the street, not sure, didn't bother me!!
Some people say it's bad for you're car to leave it idling, some say it's good to leave it idling for a couple of minutes - some don't care!!!!!!!

Shouldn't be able to start it in gear, unless it's not installed correctly (or has been fiddled ) - my one had to be set when you leave the car, i.e when you park (engine in neutral, handbrake on) you press two buttons on the fob, take the key out and the engine stays running, shut the door and when you hit the button to lock the car, it switches off the ignition!! Therefore guaranteeing it's in neutral when you start it remotely!!!

Don't forget to leave the heater set to warm and toasty

When started, the engine idles but the doors remain deadlocked. If you manage to get in, touch the clutch, without putting the key in first and it kills the engine (same even if you use the fob to unlock it - you still need the key in!).

I'll be getting remote start on the touring eventually!! I love it!!

Of course, there is nothing wrong with coming out after a long night shift, fighting a cold,stiff doorlock, opening the car yourself, scraping the ice off the windows and waiting in the cold for the mist to clear and the heater to warm up!!!
You'll have time to watch me step into my warm car and drive off!!!

It's an option (built-in or otherwise).

I spoke to the fella that installed my Sigma alarm about it. He also said it removed the insurance approved status of a cat1 alarm (amongst a few other personal feelings ;) ).

Much like if you or I fit a cat1 alarm. It's useless as far as the insurance approved status goes as you need a certificate from a qualified installer to do the job for it to be approved.

I think a number of them are designed to work alongside any existing alarm, sure a load I looked at were like that!

Mine was done at no extra cost from a friend who fitted My Clifford G5 (later Version)....to be honest i hardly ever use it......Its exciting to start off with, then u almost forget u ever had it fitted....
