its what i call badge snobbery. they may look similar but are a fraction of the cost and arent the real mcoy so are classed as council by some.its all about the label as is the same with designer clothes etc.

Council is defined as something that would not look out of place on a Manchester sink estate, surrounded by chavs and teenage mothers swigging Buckfast.

Its your car, never worry about somone elses opinion.
If somone gives their opinion when its not required - tell them to go f@ck themselves wether it be on a forum or at a show.
If you listen to everyone on here you will end up with a standard car looking like everyone elses, and its a FACT that the best looking E30s come from europe and are coverd in "council" bits...
I realy wouldn't take styling tips off people with standard cars with factory spec because they think their 1989 E30 is a classic car.
I would suggest that you dont change anything you cant change back (blot on)and always keep the old parts,so lights, exhaust, suspension, wheels.

Here are some council cars looking better than standard.

Clearly you misunderstand council..

Great choice of comparison shot also.. A filthy Touring taken with a phone camera, by someone who has has no apparent photography skills, nothing like a fair comparison

The point I was making was its not the parts you use its how you use them, thease cars dont look council because the parts are well balanced - if the cars were on standard rims they would look council as f@@k.
IE - eyebrows and a volvo splitter with 15" BBS is gonna look council, but with a set of 9j rims looks ok because its a balance.

Its not badge snobbery, its the fact they are a poor imitation that doesnt function as good as the design it copied from, much like a ht manifold. This is what makes them council just like fake designer cloths from the market!

in the case of the reps, its a wheel , it functions like any other wheel . its made of alloy much like the others, some say its inferior quality alloy but ive never yet seen any proof of that other than opinions that seem to go both ways. it weighs about the same as the original so other than the fact the badge isnt right there isnt really much difference in real terms.
the manifold issue would be different as that is a performance orientated part so poorer quality does have a detrimental effect.

Have you ever owned or even held a genuine alpina alloy? No thought not!
The bks weigh more than the real thing and more than 15" bbs. Wheels are just as much a performance part as a manifold as excess unsprung weight will effect the way a car handles.
Why do you think some wheels are made of magnesium?

a bk weighs 17.5, a 15" weighs 15.5.not a great difference in an e30. your right ive not ive not owned real alpinas but having handled them plenty they dont feel any lighter than a bk rep. wasnt it simon that said the genuine alpina weighed somewhere between the bbs and the rep? i cant remember who it was for sure. would you be able to feel the difference of say 1kg per corner in your e30 when driving hard?
anyway this is old boring ground so i cant be bothered going over it all again.

2kgs is significant when you are talking rotational mass and unsprung mass..

There is a reason BMW bothered with ali arms on the M3 and continue to do so on newer models

Also what were the respective tyre sizes? 205/40/17 vs. a 205/55/15..

As a tyre fitter i can tell you for defo that the rolling radious is very similar. If you put the 2 tyres together there is just alot less side wall on the 17" i will post pic tomorrow.

all performance aspects appreciated - there's no question that the genuine alpina wheels are better than replicas... I've learned first hand how much a few kilos of rotating mass can upset the car after moving from porsche 944 wheels (on the car when I got it) back to 15" bbs....

but if say someone drove past in an E30 with unknown alpina wheels (too fast for you to count the spokes or anything sad like that), would your first opinion be 'cool wheels' or 'council tat'?

that's your answer to the debate about the wheels. I know the answer is likely to be 'depends on the rest of the car' and for a lot of these mods, that's what it's about....particular mods in themselves are not 'council' it's the whole package.

Apart from my rear speakers, which were a case of mis ordered sizing, and my Ht manifold, which can,t be seen anyway, there is not one bit of council on my car.
However, i,m as council as they come. Born and raised in a Hackney slum, and proud of my origins. Happy in my own skin with no delusions of granduer.
Don,t need Hartge, Alpina, AC shnitzer parts, any more than i need Designer labels displayed
openly on my car or clothes, to tell me i,m as good, or bad as the next man.
Do what makes you happy, in life as well as your car mods, as long as it does,nt hurt anyone else, who gives a feck.

Agreed! But if you have some of those slip - over 'racing' seat belt covers on the car when you nip down to Tescos......

This is like a 325i vs 325Sport or 325Sport v 318is........
Easy way to answer the question- go see COTM vote thread Hongkongfuey is in the lead, go check out the pics. His Interceptor is one version of council, something like Elf's big wheeler is another version of council. Loads of cars can be council whether they are finished or working progress or heaps of sh1t. Doesn't even matter if you've thrown loads of £ at a car or botched it- it can still be council. Even Maxfield Snr's M3 is council and it's a great car :D
