HELP!! Removing a F*****G Gearknob

Trying to get an original Alpina wooden gearknob off, been trying for a while feel like i am about to rip the gearbox out, any suggestions?
One hard, sharp tug!

A straight pull,twisting it buggers the way the knob locates on the stick....

Got it off sooo pleased, i warmed it up and i think that helped, It hit me right in the neck, couldn't swallow for about 2 minutes!!

Sometimes it is not possible without removing the gear lever, putting the metal selector end in a vice (with the knob pointing downwards) and then pulling down.
Pulling it hard in situ can just yank out the ring out that the lever goes in
I've been yanking the old knob off many times with my leather games!
