Engines in standard e30's are: M10, M40, M42, M20, & S14. The capacity is identified as a 'B' number. ie. M20 B25 is the six cylinder 2.5 litre engine. M42B18 (318IS) is the only twin cam engine in the lineup except for the S14 (M3) hence it's nickname as the 'Baby M3'

Im 21 and have 2 years no claims, and I pay 600 quid with Adrian Flux
I was going to suggest adrain flux(but phone them) and Highways, both gave me good quotes.

I wish I was lucky enough to be smoking around in an IS when I was 18!! Just get out there and enjoy it mate.

You're right about going fully comp with direct line, I found they were cheaper than TPFT too - strange, but I'm not complaining! You should get a quote with them as your mum as the first and you just as a named as you still build up no claims if you take out your insurance with them later on.

Stick with the IS. It'll be rewarding enough, especially if you're used to 40bhp corsas!!!!

Stick with the 318is. A good little introduction to the delights of RWD with just enough power to be entertaining but not enough to get you into trouble. An unexperienced driver and a 325i often ends in tears.

an engine swap on these is pee ppee easy....much easier than a fwd car
you may not find as good a car as you have,,,and regret it later when it's too late m8
the is will beat a 320i and have petrol left afterwards
that alone keeps me happy

The IS is a good car... its nippy enough, in the wet its still a laugh, tbh I have learnt alot about car control with mine. I just hate the noise it makes, all screamy.

Like others have said, you'll crash with a 325... the IS lets you get away with being silly with it, to a point. My mate bought his 325 and a week later I had my IS, a month on, he stacked his into a lamp post, with me sat in the back. And he's not a cockrider driver either, it was just a case of coming from a long line of fast FWD cars, and forgetting you treat RWD totally differently.

Enjoy the IS for now, then just convert yours when insurance/funds permit. If your shell is really solid, then I think thats eaiser than all the hassle of looking for a new car.

Im 21 and have 2 years no claims, and I pay 600 quid with Adrian Flux. 1100 really isnt that bad, I know older people are going to say thats bollocks but I paid 900 quid to insure my 1985 1.8 Mk2 Golf GTI last year. My mate has a 1.5 Mazda 323 and pays 800 odd.
my mate who is 17 has mangaged to insure a mazda 323 2.0 v6 for 1k in his mums name, im supprised its that cheap even in his mums name, seems dodgey to me :?

i almost converted him to get an e30 but said the mileage on them is too high and they will be unreliable ...... utted bullshit  his mazda 323 v6 has done less than 50k and its always in the garage, he spent 400 quid fixing it last week

You can do if you stay with direct line - my girlfriend is on my policy and it sayd she will also be entitled to ncb discount as long as you renew your insurance with them

Doing that your just asking to bend it around a lamp post , a 318is still had a ton of poke for a younger driver and it is a good base to get use to the E30.

An iS isn't a sport.

Have a non standard engine swap then? done anything other than fit cheap springs and dampers?

Many many things you can do with an e30

What has an Escort got to do with an E30?

It isn't my thing sadly, I already have ACS/H&R suspension setup.. The only improvement worth doing would be coilovers

ive had a chromie before and the only thing with them is that they have an "old person stigma attached to them" (im going to get some stick for saying that) although i would like another, but it wont be my daily would fancy a really early chromie with an 3.5 m30 in for weekends winkeye

i nearly baught a Y reg 316 chromie in silver with 70k on the clock for 300 quid but i went to put a deposit down and the guy wernt there bloody time wasters

i was going to go again the following week but i found my IS and it seemed a better buy for 500 quid
