I am vaguely aware of a self diagnostic involving pressing the accelerator 5? times, and looking out for specific flash sequences on the dash.

Does anyone have more info?

Here is the only link i can find now but i'm certain at least one article i read it was on about the e30.

http://www.unitedbimmer.com/forums/e36/ ... -code.html

I think my 89 320i is a motronic 1.3 with 50 odd pins on the plug.

I've tried all different speeds of presses,

It's about activating the idle and WOT on the trottle position switch. I do not hear a click when WOT so I'm assuming i need to clean this, maybe drill a drainage hole.

Does this self diagnostic work on my car?

The link is for the later E36, I don't think your car will have the engine check light for it to flash.

The CHECK light on mine is for the Check controle pannel for the fluid levels and bulbs, not the ECU.

I was thinking that, the other articles where mentioning an "engine check" light, and I was wondering if this meant my "check"light.

so the set-up in question will have a light that says "engine check", not just "check"? is this applicable to all e30s?

Only works on US models apparently - U K spec ones don't have the Check Engine light bulb fitted.

can be done easily, locate ECU pin 15. Tap this pin and connect it to a small 5w 12v bulb (instrument bulb). Connect the other side of that bulb to 12v live. On igniton the bulb will light and will work as per the american spec. Stomp test will work through it. I have cut a small shave off the wire for mine and allegator clamp a small bulb to it every now and then too read the error codes. I cant remember the wire colour but I am sure someone else can provide that... It is also available in the 101 connector in the engine bay btw...
