It's essentially a Chev 427 (7.0L) 400 BHP motor but does anyone know if this has ever been done before?

454 is more like 7.4 litres and externally the engine and block are no different than the 358 (5.7) lump, this i know as we have just put the same lump in my mates truck. i have seen this engine in the orange Varsteiner (sp?) M3 and apart from custom engine mounts/exhaust and a 6 speed gearbox from a Chevy Lumina/Holden Commedor.

dont fancy your petrol bills over there though!!! of the order of 50 litres per 100km

Yeah, this is the 427 though, not the 454 as Iso came out with both amongst other offerings. Be nice if we got the petrol price in line with the oil price though....that might help! :?

with the figure of 9mpg for the above a 400 bhp cossie would be much more economical and thus better for the environment. which is always to the fore of my thoughts. :D

Cheers I would appreciate it. Would the Getrag BMW/Jag box not fit with an adapter plate? Though in all honesty, is this not a pointless exercise in that it would be a huge undertaking to create a car that would be to expensive to run and therefore worth bugger all at the end of the project, this is my fear. :(

I am used to getting about 18 MPG in my previous E30, but anything lower than 20 MPG these days is suicide. I could always go LPG though? winkeye

not sure as GM/Chevy boxes are easy to source here, will look for the model number but your best source is Australia as the yanks seem not to be able to cope with three pedals, most struggle with just a single trigger winkeye

Yes it would be huge to do, hard to do, expensive to do, expensive to run, hard to get through MOT let alone insurance quotation stage. and in all honesty IMO would not be must quicker to drive than a decently set up 2.7 or M50 conversion which is a conversion well documented. the V8 would make huge amounts of torque and quite a few BHP but i reckon would be all but unusable in an E30 as the front would be so heavy and with trailing arm rear end it would be spending most of its time attempting to pass the front.

it would however make quite a nice noise winkeye

the 454 i mentioned:

BW T5 box will take the torque, as will a BW T6.

I keep having nasty thoughts about dropping the turbo Rover lump from the Rangie into the E30, but it'd be wrong in too many ways.

The Jensen motor would be too insanely heavy.

DO IT! Sounds awesome! :D

Don't go LPG in my opinion though! My dad has a 4.0 Jeep grand cherokee running on LPG and we have countless problems with it! And that supposed to be one of the best cars to convert! winkeye

Cherokees don't like LPG. Plastic inlet manifold on lots of 'em. They're fine if multi-point injected by someone who knows what they're doing, but lots have a nasty single-point mixer setup which causes loads of problems on the Cherokee for various reasons.

I'd love to LPG the Rangie, but it'd need something special to avoid all the potential problems that the turbo setup could introduce, having two management systems appears to be enough to confuse most LPG installers.

Ours has a multi point injection!

It is always running lean though for some reason! And it has a gearbox problemaswell, where it doesn't know what gear to go in when you put your foot down!

A large amount of problems for a 2001 80k Grand cherokee I think!

sounds to me like it'll be something remarkably simple to sort, quite often lambda sensors going flaketastic will cause both those issues on Yank stuff. The box does its best, but expects more poke then has to second guess itself.

I bet it's full of OBDII codes...

Why doesn't the Iso Grifo owner want to keep the original engine as a spare? :?
