With fuzzy's tag, the S prefix indicates that an LSD would be fitted.

As he says, it was an optional extra on a 325i touring.

Gravel spinning means feck all. The fact only one wheel spins up when 'diffin' would indicate an open diff. Do a proper 'roll back' burn out and count the black lines on tarmac.

No, it's just cooler. The car gets smoker and stays on the spot longer. Try it.

jack only one side of the rear up,if you can turn the raised wheel by hand then it is an open diff. If not then you have an lsd :)....

Remember to take the hand brake off lol..

you don't have to, spin one wheel with the car in the air and if the other spins the same way by itself then you have an LSD

not so true as i did this with a open diff and the wheels both span the same way 8O i though 'get in ive got a slipper' then i a mate held the wheel on one side and i span the other.

def open dif or a majorly distroyed slipper. i guess open.

Was the car in gear? If it span the same way I'd say it was majorly destroyed, slipper or not.

An open diff can spin same way if the preload is high on the sun/planet gears.
Ford rangers are a good one for that, sticker on diff say only to use lsd oil and both wheels turn same way,but its an open diff for sure as only very high spec wildcat get them.

I guess that makes sense but surely only if the engine's out of gear other wise it must be easier to turn the wheel over than the engine or am I missing something? (That's why I wanted to know if it was in gear)

if its in gear and both wheels are off the ground the diff will turn regardless,if one wheel is on the ground and its in gear then it wont turn, basically your trying to turn the engine over by hand.
becareful though,i bout my mk2 escort and the people selling thought it had the diff swapped for an open type.
its got a quaife/torsen fitted, acts as an open diff when wheels are off ground.
bloody exspensive too :D

Ok, I'm happy with that but sticking for the time being to a world of only clutch pack lsd's and normal open diffs; surely if the car is in gear with both wheels in the air then if you turn one wheel with an open diff then the other must rotate the other way. With the only way of both spinning the same way is if you rotate the input shaft to the diff or prop, whatever the preload surely you can't rotate the engine?

My expectation would be as long as the car is in gear then an open diff's output shafts should rotate in different directions.

Lucky you with the mk2, dead jealous :x.
