I'm in the same position with my touring. I think it’s got more to do with it feeling like a stop gap than anything. The idea was the use the Touring for a year and then get something a lot bigger and better, in your case maybe an iS, in my case another Supra. But after a bit of research, the cheapest company I can find to insure me on the Touring, will insure a Supra for ”˜just’ £150 more (remember, I’m 17, when paying 4 figure insurance premiums, £150 is just a drop in the ocean ).

Needless to say, the Touring is on the bay as we speak, while I live for the moment and hunt down a MK3 Supra. I've considered being sensible and keeping the Touring, but I then I asked myself the question, What sense is there in paying out of the arse for insurance on a car you don’t usually love? and there really wasn't an answer.

At your age mate, your E30 isn't going to be fast one, and modifications will put your insurance through the roof, so I'd advise just trying to make it look as nice as possible. You don't have to be OCD about it - take those tights off your rear lights, give it a good wash and wax, maybe even t-cut the paint to get it nice and shiny again. Once you've done it well once, the upkeep won't be as difficult, just the occasional jetwash will do. Get your BBS painted silver again and spray all your trim satin black. A well kept E30 is something to be proud of and should make you feel better about driving around in it.

My car is a shed, possibly one of the worst here, but it still works (just), has got me all over the country in the past few months and when I got for a blast it's huge fun. I wouldn't swap it for most of the cars my friends drive.

your not mistaken. mk3 was indeed sh1te. mk1 + 2 is were its at.

oh, don't for one second think if you get a micra and save up, thinking you'll have the money for a nice sport in a few years time... their value will go up and you will spend the savings on beer. no savings and a micra outside. not a good situation

E30's are cheap, plentiful and fun, just like mk1/2 escorts were when i had them. i used to pay £60 for a whole car from the breakers, to take home and frag for spares. nowadays each one i killed would fetch £2k minimum. (my RS being nearer £10k)

if you give up on the E30 now, you might not be able to justify the 'classic status' cost when it happens. This is the reason i've not got a mk1 escort on the drive

Exactly the reason I bought mine! Can't really explain why I've now got 3 though... I have been considering building a collection including every body style, though I may have to book myself into rehab if that happens...



maxfield, keep your e30, you know it makes sense! When I was your age, it wasn't about how fast your car was anyway, it was about how fast you drove it and how cool you looked while you were at it - I think you're on to a winner compared to any FWD modern toss.

I don't like those clio's, way too much chassis flex when you can hear the sunroof chattering and creaking on anything but a bowling-green type road.... although one of my earlier cars was a bright green MK1 phase 3 clio and i liked it

That was before owning an E30, driving one now is disapointing, unless it's a MK1 16v, but theyre a swine to work on.

Sell her, buy a cheap diesel turd and get saving for a sport. Stay away from the pub and drink carry outs, i had to do this for a few years until i got the coin for mine, but its well worth it!

Keep it and stick with it. An E30 is a heck of a lot nicer than what most other youngsters drive these days!
A bit of youthful indescretion put me back on the expensive end of insurance, and I came to the conclusion that an E30 touring fit the bill better than anything else I could have had for the same money to buy and insure. A tidy one is a nice place to be, and it is worth the effort of a bit of hoovering and whatever to keep it that way. My premiums will drop again soon enough, but I'll be sticking with it because its nicer to drive than my previous car, and cheaper to run (though it lacks grunt in comparison). However, when I have the cash a 24v will definitely be dropped in!
